I avoid them when I'm already kinda down. They can be pretty good though and leave a lasting impression.

It depends on the subject matter, but not really, for the most part. I don't get down in the dumps from tragedy in fiction.

Not a fan of sad movies with silver linings. Like Requiem for a Dream was just sad with no upsides.

Depends. If it's just a movie with a melancholy atmosphere I'm fine with it, but I'd it's a movie that just makes things sad for the sake of it? No.

I like watching sad movies when I'm in the mood for it. Sometimes I like to get in my feels.

Yeah, there needs to be a clear message or point. I know it's not a movie, but as much as I love TLOU2, it's a perfect example of sad and misery for the sake of it.

Not off the table, but I don't heavily seek them out. And especially when it's hard for others to find positivity, I tend to seek comfort entertainment to chill out on. Even then some dark moments before the happy endings and such, aren't off the table either.

Maybe Ill give that one a shot sometime. Seen two Van Trier films atm (Dogville + Dancer in the Dark) and while the former defied my expectations considerably I wasnt too impressed with the latter so hes 50/50 for me as it stands.

I'm not a huge fan of his either but I think Melancholia hits like a truck.

Well one of my favorites is less of a perfect happy ending, but still hopeful.

Anyone ever watch The Incredible Shrinking Man? Screenplay was by Richard Matheson who wrote the original book The Shrinking Man.
