How can you teach English in Japan if you don't speak Japanese?

It's for students who already have a very basic understanding of English. It's pretty common.

Japan functions on a level that is unheard of in most Western countries outside of the nordic ones, I feel like we should get people to stop shitting in the streets, stealing cars or not openly shooting drugs on our trains before we tell the Japanese what to do lmao. They're doing way better than we are.

This is because East Asia has a completely different culture than the west. Said culture (just like western culture) is a double-edged sword because much of it involves conformity and collective guilt.

For example, when that one Chinese passenger let her 2yo shit on an airline seat, the reaction from Chinese citizens was a level of embarrassment and apologies that would be unheard of in the west. Maybe I remember it incorrectly, but I don't recall very much "most of us are not like this" The level of shame people showed in reaction to the story was akin to what you'd see from an immediate family member of the culprit.

Most of Japan doesn't mind tourists, they just don't want the tourists to live there. There are a few extremists, but that's with any country.

Japan is xenophobic, according to the generally accepted term of xenophobia. This isn't new.

Because typically those classes are taught fully in English to help immerse the students. Same thing with other countries. One of my former co-workers lived in China for a year teaching English. She didn't speak any Chinese though.

Whether people care or not it does affect them. Japan is one of the leading imports and exports of goods and as much as the board consumes its products and discuss it like anime, computers, etc. They feel the reprecussions real or imagined their stakes.

Does The Line need to go up forever? Capitalism is pretty harmful, why is it so important for the economy to never pull back at all?

I dont know what line projections you are looking at but japan is currently on course to sucumb to its declining birthrate and become unable to have afunctioning eonomy at all.

I dealt with the xenophobia firsthand while I was there, and honestly it was nothing compared to everything being clean, safe, cheap, and actually functional.

Japans economy sucks for many reasons. I could list stuff but its all pretty obvious. Dinosaur politicians, being slow to change, general apathy towards everything, etc.

As for Bidens comment. Its half true. The general population isnt racist. They are just naive. Its like your grandpa who still calls all Asians Oriental. Of course there is the odd guy who hates foreigners, but they are often weird anyway.

Immigration here is. Strict. They have problems with foreigners coming and suddenly leaving. Apartments often dont rent to foreigners, because the up and leave without paying rent. Hate to say it, but it happens a lot. Japanese companies could try to be a little more accommodating when it comes to renting homes though, for sure. But then many foreigners are insanely naive about Japan and only seem to know anime and manga.

Biden is definitely calling out the zombie politicians though. These guys are too slow to change, dont really do anything, are severely out of touch with people, are pushed by weirdo political cults, and are probably suffering dementia or stress related disease.

They do this in every country.

Its total immersion.

It works in most cases.

And for younger classes, they usually have a Japanese head teacher who helps with complicated topics.

But it works for many reasons. One being, translating from Japanese to English would be useless in most cases, so learning from scratch can work. Kids often just begin by learning phrases with context, plug-and-say kind of stuff, and role playing. Grammar almost never becomes a thing until JHS. Think of it as how you learned your native language as a child.

If it's anything like the English teachers in China, many use the opportunity to find it as a means of getting extra money, and often many parents doesn't care as long as you look "foreign". A minority, like a certain South African YouTuber, use the opportunity to pick up women, and is now resorting to making Sinophobic videos after getting kicked out.

Unfortunate it often goes overboard, there's the mentality among some people that even if you're the victim of racism, you get blamed for supposedly "provoking" them.

There are also certain people in HK and Taiwan who use the opportunities to bash mainlanders. I know couple of instances during COVID where victims of racial abuse gets thrown under the bus for supposedly being "mainlanders", who supposedly "doesn't know how to behave", unlike "civilized" Hongkongers and Taiwanese.

There was also another case recently where a Japanese shop banned mainland tourists and created a huge firestorm on the Chinese internet. Taiwanese nationalists came out in droves to defend the shopkeeper, and when I pointed out that what he is doing is illegal under Japanese law, they got so defensive and resorted to the "there are racist shopkeepers in China too" defence.

It's literally a few streets. It's not even legally enforced. And foreign tourists, despite being the problem (because rude tourists are absolutely a problem) are not being singled out, the rule says local residents are allowed to use the streets, not anyone else.

Most recently when negotiations for the immigration bill were being worked out in the Senate. A diverse workforce strengthens an economy with immigration being the most viable way of maintaining Social Security.

I always guess the qualified part is to keep criminals and annoying Temporary residents out. And when i say temporary residents, i mean annoying people who come, harass women, dont pay rent, desecrate private property, and dont do anything to learn the culture. They take up tech or teaching jobs, do them half-effort, then go and party in Tokyo the rest of the time.

If there is one thing Japan has succeeded in, it is that it is orderly, quiet, and the people dont stir up loud drama (only quiet passive aggressive stuff)

The English education here is very weak, not taken seriously, isnt repetitive enough, and outside of that one class, they have NO useful English interaction outside of said class. Unless they are very curious, they will only learn English to take the equally bad and useless Eiken exam,

Well I'm talking about getting around and I was stationed out in Yokosuka for over a year so if a bunch of service members who never bothered studying any Japanese could figure it out enough I'd say your average Joe won't have any problems. I'd still recommend some amount of studying especially if you want to be a teacher but it's not that difficult to navigate with just those 2 apps.
