2007 Founder CJayC left the site, sold it to CNET.
2010? CNET acquired by CBS Interactive
2020 CBS spun off GF & other game websites and sold them to Red Ventures
2022 Fandom acquired game site portfolio from Red Ventures

Usually, owners want to hold on to businesses that are growing and seen as having lots of future potential. They wouldnt be tossed around from one owner to another like a hot potato. Its a pity this site didnt keep up with the times and declined.

CJayC was the worst. Minor swearing () would get you karma-loss moderations, and ASCII art or meme chain-posting could get you suspended & banned.

2007 to 2020 not being actually sold just the parent company changing in 2010 isn't really a bad sign as such, that's not a sign if GameFAQs itself being seen as disposable.

2020 to 2022 though, that's a concern. A red flag if you will. If Fandom sells us and we somehow survive though, then we've really started to hot potato and the end is probably near regardless.

The only decline was Allen going too soft on frequent troublemakers. No reason for someone who's been in purgatory 10+ times to still have an account. A lot of absolutely horrible people were told "You're still welcome here, in X months".

Course that's nothing compared to how dreadfully Fandom has run the site.

Man, I remember when the worst thing on this site was fighting with Gamespotters once they merged and how especially pissed off CE was to see their name above ours on the home page and in the Url to the point people made firefox add ons to remove it The hatred was mutual on the Gamespot side on their forums as well , good times. Good times

This site is probably worth less than $1 million at this point. Probably more tax efficient for them to simply shut it down & write it off.

CJayC sold it to CNET along with 2 unrelated websites for $2.2 million. The other 2 were obscure, thinly-trafficked sites so $2M for GF in 2007 is probably a reasonable estimate.

This sites traffic is less than a quarter of what it was at its peak. Account for inflation & the sites decline and <$1M is probably a reasonable estimate for todays value.

Fandoms ~$50M package deal was for GF plus a bunch of other major sites like TV Guide & Metacritic.
