Also, fun fact: when I was dorming in college, we lived on the top floor of a dorm that only had stairs, and we had a handicap bathroom. I don't think people in wheelchairs are gonna be living up there lol. Everyone on the floor joked about that bathroom's existence

It probably helps that typical parking lots have hundreds of spots, whereas a typical public bathroom, especially male ones that also just "waste space" with urinals, have only 2-3 total stalls.

Honestly, so many people are the top pic lol.

I think it is very much because the image used to denote handicap spots is the wheelchair homie. "Oh it's only for people who need a wheelchair"

Like, no, old people and people suffering from non-visible disabilities still have handicaps too.

But for the handicap stalls, it's definitely not respected because mens restrooms almost never have enough stalls

And if someone is desperate enough to use a public stall, they almost certainly don't give a fuck about who it is intended for.

But back to your OP, my car doesn't get towed if I shit in the handicapped toilet.

There's your answer.

If you've gotta go, you've gotta go. If the disabled toilet is free and the others are occupied, there's no reason not to use it.

Mens room do have less stalls but urinals are actually way more space efficient. Lots of malls/department stores actually have bigger bathrooms for women to fit more stalls.

I actually do make an effort to not use the handicap stall when possible because one time I did use it and there was a guy waiting for me that clearly needed the stall and I felt fucking terrible. That said, yeah if it's the only option and I'm already desperate enough to use the public restroom yeah I'm going for it
