This is assuming that the players themselves aren't hostile and nothing is personal about it; that's an entirely different issue.

I'm talking about when players decide to make characters who simply don't like each other and/or don't want to work together, to the point of open hostility. Both players understand that it's strictly a roleplaying thing and can actually laugh about it, but how would you feel as another player at the table or the GM?

Personally I think it's fine as long as it doesn't become something that hinders the game experience or becomes actively personal outside of the game. If I start to feel like the players were starting to resent each other I'd tell them to shut it down, and if their rivalry/hostilities became something that takes too much focus away from the other players at the table or derails multiple scenes or combats, I'd have them tone it down a bit.

As a player I'd have no problem having my character pick a side, attempt to mediate, or instigate the situation further.

As a GM, I'm letting it all happen no problem as long as it makes sense in-universe. I really like pvp confrontations, but I'm not letting characters change their philosophies on a dime just because their player thinks it would be funny or exciting to scuttle what is in-universe a sensical communal effort.

move all remaining groundhog mercenaries to the front lines. Have sheep troopers squadrons A and B flank the cows. They're using DC-17 hoof blasters.

I think it can work if done properly, but (as a player) I typically look for games where all players get on and work together.

I've never come across a game where two (or more) players want to be hostile to each other. I've seen it where one player has decided this (and it's been shut down because that's not the game that we all want to play) and they tend to be the sort of people that I don't really want to play RPGs with.

Hostility being different to characters/players disagreeing about something or wanting to approach a problem in different ways.

I dislike it, as a 5e DM. As an arc because of some ingame decisions? Yes, I can rock it.

Making the PCs antagonistic during creation just means a bad time all around. 5e is a co-op game. And PCs who literally want to be in different parties or not work together is not something I'm into.
