Feels like it used to be a big debate in the 90s but then in the 2000s everyone just kinda agreed that the PS1 was way better.

But now it's the crazy space age year of 2024. The people who were kids playing these consoles now have kids of their own.

Looking back with hindsight and retrospect, what was the better console?

N64 pretty handily, but at the time I was more into the PSX for its RPG library.

Ps1 back then, and I still say it now. But I was older. I was a teenager when n64 came out. So that might have been part of the issue. I had both consoles, but while I ended up buying dozens of ps1 games, I only ever had a few n64 games. I'm pretty sure I definitely never even reached 10 games

I was an adult already and in the military when each came out. Played both extensively but to me the PS1 library was so much better it wasnt even close. That isnt to say N64 didnt have some awesome games because it did but compared to the PS1 library it didnt hold up.

PS1 by far.

I never owned an N64 but played it a bunch at friend's places, and it was fun.

But nothing on N64 can compare to games like FF7, FF9, The Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, Suikoden 2, Lunar:SSSC etc.

Seeing this post reminds me of when I came home in May of 1999 from the Navy. I went to the video game store in the mall and just based off the screen captures on the box and the description I blindly bought Legend of Legaia which had come out 2 months previously, and I bought Lunar:SSSC that had come out that month in May.

Then later that year I got Suikoden II. This was just coming off the end of the year late 98 of your previously mentioned Xenogears and also one of my favorites Brave Fencer Musashi. Star Ocean 2,

This was just in a one year period. PS1 was STACKED in that era, year after year. But 99 sticks out to me since I just had come home from the military.

It just hit me. I know why I like the N64 better and it is probably considered the most underrated aspect of it now a days. 4 PLAYER SPLIT SCREEN. That changed everything for me back then. Taking turns? Not a thing anymore for the most part. Super Smash Bros 4 player? Mario Party 4 player? Goldeneye? Mario Kart? Perfect Dark? So many more. Playing with 4 people instead of 2 was game changing and made it much more fun than the PS1 to me. That combined with the PS1 having horrendous load times.

Pretty decent view of an amazing era.
The ps1 is pretty much objectively the best of its generation, very similar to ps2. You gotta give it to other companies for even providing some competition for those behemoths.

And I suppose that's part of why it didn't wow me. At the time of the n64, I was just getting into online gaming on pc. I already experienced I think Quake or something, with way more than 4 players. And I always hated split screen compared to how its done on pc. Because nothing stops you from looking at other screens and cheating. But also, 4 player Golden eye is lame compared to whatever the max was in quake. I know it was much higher than 4

PS1 [Mine) ( for its single-player) > N64 [My brother's (beats the others in couch-co-op and party games) > Saturn (my sisters mainly played on it, but I enjoyed some games that they had like N.I.G.H.T.S.)

I'm pretty sure our consoles are still in our bedrooms the way we left them after we all moved out. Damn. The memories are coming back, maaan!

That's fair, you've got 4 player Smash Bros, Mario Party and Mariokart vs. 4 player Crash Bash and Crash Team Racing.

PS1 is what I tell myself because I like rpgs and Xenogears is my favorite.

When I think about actual gameplay though, N64 had so many different styles that were great. Star Fox 64, Perfect Dark, and No Mercy were such wonderful experiences and the older I get the more I think Star Fox 64 is one of the best game I've played.

N64 easily.

Jrpgs don't interest me at all and the games that did interest me (Syphon Filter, MGS, Tomb Raider, etc) all controlled like dogshit and looked terrible with the odd texture twitching.

N64 had Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Doom64, Legend of Zelda OoT/MM, the better version of RE2, Turok DH, Turok 2 SoE, Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, and Body Harvest.

Personally think PS1 era is one of Sonys weakest. Just my opinion though. Sony wins over Nintendo PS2 and beyond. GTA VC alone won PS2 the top spot.

PSX by far even still now. But the N64 certainly had its hits. I liked the stealth drop of the Saturn in the poll. Nice touch there. I used to own a Saturn from uhh 2004-2012 or so. Well around those later years the lens just stopped working properly which eh it happens but I thought I took care of it well enough. When I moved I just trashed it.

Bonus Saturn discussion there.

You gotta give it to the Playstation. it lasted the whole generation and then some. It got Tony hawk 4 somehow. Idk how they could have done the generation much better.
Now the console I still play these days...that's kind of a different story.
