Looking at an online tournament for this game, it's really right. Like Tekken Ball Z. I like the game play. And the combos aren't infinitely long like in Budokai 3 either

A lot of interesting and diverse strategies all around

Put so many hours into that game as a kid.

I liked the simplicity of Budokai 1 as well, 3 is amazing as well but it had too many unecessary mechanics shoe horned into the fights imo

The original also had a godly soundtrack, I dont care if it was plagiarized. The composer had great taste.

Even without the competitive aspect the cutscenes blew my mind as a kid

It was my first real exposure to dragon ball z

100%. The menu theme is one of the most nostalgic songs in existence for me

I remember years ago seeing a video comparison of the so called plagiarized music but can't find it now. I don't have an ear for music so I didn't really hear enough of a similarity to warrant the controversy but if I listen to it now I might.

Still have this game on gamecube, that means I can still play/listen to it as is right. It was my primary method of seeing DBZ's story since I rarely got a chance to see it as it aired.

I honestly credit this game not having the Buu arc as a reason why I like it the least of the main story arcs.

I played this game so much as a kid that saiyan saga to cell saga WAS dragon ball z to me. The Buu saga did not exist and the series ended with cell.

So when i eventually discovered i was missing an entire part of the story, it just felt grafted on and artificial to me. Crazy how your perception of something as a kid can inform some opinions for the rest of your life

Wasn't it that you couldn't fire a (weird, incorrect-looking) Kamehameha without throwing a punch combo first, making them basically useless as an actual ranged attack?

Other than that, liked the game a fair bit.

Yes and no. You could do that combo or just press forward + Ki blast button in order to it.

Not in Budokai 1 actually. They added that ability in Budokai 2. You have to do the full punch combo in 1

I still used them though when I was young

I had similar feelings of the serious ending at Cell Saga, but I looked at the Buu Saga content as secret exclusives that I hadn't gotten access to yet. I still liked it a lot, especially Kid Buu one of my favorite villains. I also was a big fan of Gotenks when he was revealed even though he disappointed me. Super Vegito and Super Saiyan 3 Goku were cool too. And Super Buu was just scary

Overall I guess I still liked the Buu Saga Even though the Cell Saga seemed like a logical series end

It seems it was no bans so that everybody can see what type of strategies they come up with.

The Android 19 life drain strategy was interesting to see as well

Also the Frieza player is really good overall, but yeah that Frieza spaceship puts things over the top for him
