how is partner softer than boyfriend

boyfriend sounds like its for kids imo
Partner sounds like youre trying to avoid any deterministic gendered language. It sounds like youre trying too hard to sound like a grown-up, which is what a kid does. And it lacks any romantic connotation, like I already said.

"Unalive"

I saw this on a deposition the other day, and I asked one of the partners what does this mean and he told me its a softer way of saying dead, or killed. And I asked him I was like, who would those words possibly offend, certainly not the dead guy. I dont think he cares.

i believe unalive came about because social media algorithms bury content that has words like dead, murder, kill, gun, rape, etc - not due to people being offended by it, but because advertisers don't like that kind of thing

Of course, Im not contesting thats how its used. Its also used to refer to anyone you work with on a project. Im not saying its a technically incorrect, Im saying it sounds soulless to refer to someone you love with the same term as someone you work with. I would never do it and I roll my eyes as anyone who does, as per the prompt for this discussion.

I agree with this. I find it odd when straight couples use it because when someone says "My partner" because I just assume they're not in a straight relationship. Which I would support either way, it doesn't matter to me. But I do find it odd language to use because it's so unspecific.

Yeah, the people who use the term "unalive" on social media hate using it as much as everyone else. They don't really have a choice in the matter. Which sucks, because many of them are talking about serious issues they've dealt with, and the algorithm is just trivializing it by preventing them from opening up about it.

The point is normalization, same with pronouns.

It's trying to take things like that and make them less of a flashing neon sign that says "THIS PERSON IS QUEER."

It's typically used in reference to suicide, which is something that leaves a lot of trauma behind. So while obviously the dead person isn't going to be affected by word choices, people who are traumatized by a loved one's suicide most certainly could be.

This seems backwards to me. Straight people flaunt their relationships as societal norms. IMHO Normalization here should encourage using the same terms straight people use to refer to their boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife. idk why we need to lean more towards using such grey language and less clarity personally. In the year 2024, it should be okay to flaunt whatever relationship you are in.

The point I'm making is business partner exist because "partner" can have multiple meanings. I'd almost bet that "partner" by itself is used more commonly to mean in a romantic way than it is in a business type relationship since most I've seen would actually say "business partner" instead of just partner.

If I met you for the first time and you told me your name and said this person here is your partner, I would assume you meant life partner. I'm refuting your point about "partner" not having any romantic connotation to it.

Literally going to google and typing "partner" and I see

I disagree. Even though "partner" is gender neutral I still think it's plenty romantic, given when it's the context for someone's relationship with someone else. It's also a deeper thing for me. My girlfriend isn't just my girlfriend, she is my partner. We're a team.

Just my two cents.

Ive actually already addressed this point. I understand how people use the term and I never said it was grammatically incorrect.Partner can refer to any people that are working together on something. For me, thats far too impersonal to use for a significant other, and I think its weird.

I think youre missing the point of the topic.

Agreed, especially if youve been together forever. Nowadays more people just spend their lives together without feeling the need to put an official marriage stamp on it. Ive been with mine 25 years and counting and neither of us feel a ring or a license are necessary to say what we already know and I think more and more people today are like that. And after so long calling her my girlfriend just doesnt feel like it covers the depth of our commitment so we use partner.

I join the many others saying woke now that MAGA extremism has taken ownership of the term. There are very few things that will close me off to a persons opinion immediately, but someone calling something woke will do it.

For some reason, anyone saying that something hits different makes me cringe.

My kids and their friends use Rizz all the time and I dont hate it, but I will always remember it as the first slang term to make me feel old. Because my kids had to explain it to me.
