Yeah I dont get this, I mean in the movie they showed how he got the ring then they moved into the caves for hundreds of years. That was all the coverage that was needed imo.

I'd argue that people do care about Gollum, but in his role as a weird creature twisted by the ring. A sort of horror cautionary tale. That doesn't mean he can carry a story as the protagonist. Some stories don't need to be told, some might be more effective if you leave some of the mystery even.

That said I don't think there's any story idea that's impossible to mine something from; if someone has a really interesting idea about Gollum they need to share in movie form who knows? If an exec was like "Hey make me another one of them lotr films, they make a lot of dough, I don't care about what, how bout that Gollum guy" it's probably doomed to suck tho.

People absolutely care about Gollum, he's one of the most important characters in the series and Andy Serkis' performance is lauded as one of the best in the films.

He can't carry a story on his own or be the focus (and really shouldn't be) but "no cares about Gollum" is just factually untrue.

Im not sure how I feel about this. Andy Serkis is, of course, amazing as the character but I felt like he was a little too cutesy in the movies if that makes sense.

I prefer a creepier Gollum. Like, I know they needed to make him more tragic / relatable, but I think they couldve tone down the cutesy-ness a bit.
