For things like arena or if you ignore trading / single sales and stuff, yes. the core function of buying card packs is basically a gacha.

It definitely has similarities in terms of how the gambling mechanics work and drive people, but theres also an actual robust gameplay system that can draw people in for the sake of it, and you can get everything you want on the secondhand market.

I'd say no. MtG you're gonna pay for that chase rare and no way to actually get it otherwise short of someone gifting you. Gacha's you can either pay to get it (and fail) or save up and fail but get the pity. MtG requires money whereas gacha doesn't.

Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is not typically considered a Gacha game. MTG is a collectible card game (CCG) where players build decks using cards from various sets, each containing different gameplay mechanics and strategies. While there is an element of randomness in opening booster packs to obtain new cards, MTG primarily focuses on strategic gameplay rather than the randomized character acquisition model commonly found in Gacha games.

If Magic stops making cards tomorrow, I can still play it with my friends. I can even play Magic in ways that Wizards of the Coast doesn't approve of. If I'm done with the hobby, I can sell my cards. Wizards of the Coast cannot lie about the rates at which different rarities of cards appear. These are all fundamental differences from gacha games.

None of that is true for MTGO or Arena if they shut down the servers tomorrow.

No. Compared to gachapon they are selling a game over a toy, and compared to gacha video games they are selling a product over the content. They are all similar in terms of them selling you a randomized product, but that largely doesn't mean very much in the grand scheme of products as a whole. Like, if you buy a chef's special at a sushi place where they actually take the concept seriously is it a gacha system because you don't know what you're getting? The context of things like intent matter quite a bit in this sort of ordeal.

I don't know if this is really true, or well, they could lie just as well as any gacha game could lie

I mean, both of those are huge parts of the Magic ecosystem, and also, aside from the physical nature of the actual cards, it's the exact same thing.

If you take away the fact that Magic cards have been a physical thing for 30 years, the mechanics of the game aren't really any different than a gacha system. Also, gachapon machines in Japan were prevalent as early as the 1960s, well before MtG was a thing - I don't feel like Googling the entire history of TCG / CCGs atm, but like....there's definitely a relation, even if unintentional.

That's true. Which basically proves my point that they aren't always gachas.
