Me: Are you sure?
Customer: Yes.
Me: Do you want the data I have on you?
Customer: No
Me: So you just want to cancel the service without getting any of the data you have for using the service?
Customer: Yes
Me: Are you really sure you want to do this?
Customer: Yes
Me: ok, it's cancelled.

(5 minutes later)

Customer: WHY ISN'T (service we just cancelled) WORKING!?!?!?!

I said me but it wasn't really me. This was a highly documented string of meetings with the support and customer service teams which I wasn't a part of but I've been reading the emails and MS teams messages about it.

i wish that customer thought it through more and have the service cancelled before they got charged for the next month.
it's the right way to do it imo (less hassle for both parties).

Cancellations are almost never immediate at my job. There's always a cancellation date and a wind down period where we regularly check our endpoints to make sure nobody is using them.

I worked for Verizon CS very briefly as my first job. Cancelations were awful. Verizon would change the rules after baiting people into contracts and we had to talk the customer down. The call would take like an hour to cancel someone's service unless they said the magic words.

Worst job ever.
