This is an interesting relic to see just how accepted and widespread sexism was.

Wasn't there just backlash a couple months ago Greta Gerwig didn't get nominated for Best Director at Oscars. Women getting snubbed and left out still happens. You don't have to go back to the 1930s.

There's a lot of space between "this creative woman arguably didn't get the recognition she deserves" and "you're not allowed to be a creative because you're a woman". Sexism is still a problem, but the progress made shouldn't be discounted.

These days companies wouldn't even bother with a rejection letter. They like it that way because there's less chance for litigation if there's only a nebulous lack of response on their part.

it does still happen

not in a written letter

but sexist men during a interview can poit blank say your a woman we wont hire you

and there is nothing that can be done about it

as odds are the woman wont have the money to hire a lawyer

Well, if you're in a state that allows for 'one party consent for recording' then you could supply evidence against the person doing the hiring. At which point the company would just push that person under the bus and continue on as usual.

This was only 18 years after women got the right to vote. I imagine if someone tried to sue for this back then they wouldn't even get a day in court.

What you are saying definitely isn't common, but instead an outlier as only a dumb company or dumbass activist employee would openly do this.

Even if the people at the top dont like a specific group of people, if anything a smart company is more likely to use one of the many low hanging loop holes that doesn't even need a company to lawyer up. Loop holes that doesn't even need for a company to inform you they don't want you because of your race, gender, sexual preference, etc.

I'm not saying discrimination in the work place against woman, non whites, LGBT, etc doesn't happen. Im sure thats common. I'm just saying a company blatantly informing a candidate, we don't hire woman or something? Definitely an outlier done by an idiot asking to either be fired or introduce unwanted legal action against the company.

It's a clever way to circumvent some laws, and as to the other post, Disney are unfortunately pretty shrewd at finding loopholes. Hell I recently discovered what was Disney's whole 65-episode season thing about.

I think all companies, and maybe even universities, should send out rejection letters with the 7 Dwarves smiling at you. Would lessen the blow.
