I remember hearing about this years ago. Now it's almost time. They don't think it will hit. But it's passing by us will affect it's orbit and it may have a higher chance of a hit next time. But by then we might have the technology to push it out of the way or even destroy it

So "Apep" is the normal form of the god's name but Apophis is a giant snake, the lord of chaos, and the enemy of Ra.

It's a fitting name for the asteroid.

If you mean in our lifetime, yes. But in all of Earths remaining eons, no. It's believed that a massive asteroid like the one that killed the dinosaurs hits earth every once in a while. I think scientists believe the dinosaur one wasn't the first of that size to hit the planet. But I'm not sure if we habe evidence of the older ones. It was too long ago.

But given enough time, Earth gets smacked from time to time, and assuming humans continue to exist into the far future, at some point our species will have to worry about this

The law of averages says we will be hit again. Unless we use science to stop it

they might be able to calculate that thing's orbit, but they cant calculate every orbit of every asteroid.

one little space rock hits Apophis and it's on course to obliterate earth.

Did you miss the part where they confirm it's passing closer than the moon? Like it's passing 5 earth-lengths away. closer than the fucking satellites.

the math isnt 100% even if they say it is

Again, it does not have a 2.7% chance of hitting the Earth. It has a 0% chance.

Literally the same afternoon as that 2.7% chance was mentioned, they ran it again and discovered that no, there's actually no chance. There's a very small chance that the 2029 passage by Earth might alter its trajectory enough that it could make impact in the future, but when I say small, I mean small. 1 in hundreds of thousands.

so you're confident in nasa's ability to predict orbits 5 years into the future. im sure solar wind, another asteroid, space dust, a rogue satellite are all perfectly accounted for.

maybe a grad student phoned-in one of their calculations.

maybe the asteroid has frozen hydrogen on it, and that will melt and alter it's trajectory. yes that is a thing that can happen.

so gtfo of here with 0% chance. they are saying it's passing 5 earth-lengths away. like...that is very close, don't you think?

Read the damn article.

The chance that there would be an impact in 2029 was eliminated by late December 27, 2004, as a result of a precovery image that extended the observation arc back to March 2004.
