The main story was really great, up until they ruined the Aeris scene. Cloud getting in the way of the stab, just for it to be a fakeout. Really dumb. Didn't even have the part of dropping her in the water. WTF was SE thinking here. Just play it 1:1 and stop trying to go for overly convoluted shit that just confuses the player.

And of course they had to make an annoyingly long final boss.

Oh well. Still enjoyed it a lot otherwise. Every other scene with Tifa, Yuffie, and/or Aeris was a 10/10 moment.

Now to wait 3 years for the finale.

That sounds dumb. The whole point was how helpless Cloud felt concerning Sephiroth.

Why would they change it lol.

I'm hoping the payoff will show that it DID happen 1:1 but we are seeing it from Clouds now completely broken pov

Like going forward, he's going to be happily continuing the adventure while the rest of the cast will be wondering why he's so unaffected

This and them missing the entire point of the Midgar Serpent were head scratchers to me.

It's been so long since I've played the original I wouldn't even remember what's different there.

But the swimsuits!

From what I've heard, they were putting you into Cloud's POV and showing you just how messed up Cloud is mentally. Like at that very moment, he's doing the exact same thing he did following Zack's death where he's denying reality and crafting a new one in his head so that he doesn't have to deal with the trauma he would have felt otherwise. (Someone else can probably put it into much better words lol).

That said, while I can see what they were going for, I still don't like it compared to how it is in the original one.

They did change it but they also didn't. The main story beats are the same, there's just stuff added to it.

Cloud stopped Sephiroth and saved her, but then it cut back to the universe in the game, which is largely unchanged. Cloud was still helpless to protect her, but they did a swerve by showing you another reality where he did.

It's still probably going to be my GotY, but there's so much they added with her death that it greatly diminishes its impact.

On top of this, you go back to the forgotten capital in the OG with Bugenhagen at the end of disc 2 which replays Aerith's death scene so they're probably going to show the "real" version in part 3. It's still kind of dumb but at least there's some semblance of a plan.

I wouldn't say they're garbage, but Link's Awakening and Mario RPG remakes - while great - were still very forgettable for the reason of being 1:1 remakes.

I don't want the whole game to be 1:1. The additions to bring more depth to the cast are great. But important scenes like this shouldn't be messed with.

Yeah, the scene changing and the devs seemingly not wanting to let her go was the only issue I had with the game.

I didn't feel it was bloated because I actually enjoyed the side content, and genuinely wanted to do it. And the combat is as good as it was in Remake, which I still believe has more complexity than the older ATB style.

Im almost done the OG FF7 right now. The story, while good for its time Im sure, is filled with awful, elementary school-level dialogue and plotting. If the remake/reimagining changed things around then I have no issue with that. It sounds like they missed the mark by making Aeris death overly confusing, but around that time in the OG youre scratching your head wondering how nothing about Sephiroth or Jenova is making any sense.

The final fight was too long, but I actually really like how it was executed with different groups taking on the boss together and seeing how one victory impacts the other fights. I also agree with people who say that without some kind of crazy fight this game would have had a boring ending so I get why they made it over the top.

Yeah, it's basically this. Nomura described it as a different approach to dealing with death. While the original had a very real and sudden depiction of death, Rebirth tries a different interpretation of being confronted with denial over the death of a loved one (his own words).

So I see what they're going for, there's obviously gonna be the actual payoff later as to what actually happened with her, but it just depends on the individual on if it was pulled off well.

Both final boss rushes in the remake games have been confusing as hell from a story point of view imo. I really hope they clear them both up in the final game but I imagine they'll just leave them as well.

I get that. She's dead, but it's clear that she's not going to be gone. It's definitely going to tie in with Cloud's mental breakdown in part 3.

I like what they did with it.

Its one of the biggest spoilers in all of gaming. There was no way just repeating the death would have any impact.

Not having her die was also the biggest theory before the game released.

Doing both was really the only avenue they could have had. I do wish theyd implemented it better though. Like maybe have us just save her and live with that for a while before crushing us with the truth. I didnt like the snap cuts between it

they introduced the idea of defying fate

but now they just threw that plot idea out the window
