To me, I think it is absolutely insane anyone in this country is paid under $20 an hour. I think thats really the minimum you need to get an apartment these days and Im of the mindset everyone has a right to shelter.

Asking because I heard Missouri allegedly lowered it to $7.70 but seems like BS.

Minimum wage should be enough to survive on in your local economy. Far too many people still think that minimum wage should be for kids to supplement their living at home or at uni. No one should be making minimum wage.

I like that. Maybe 10% of average home purchase price must be the federal minimum wage. That actually tracks with what I was saying coincidentally. Average home sold for about 450 in 2023. $20 an hour is 42k.

About 150% of the cost of a single person apartment. Basically, a minimum wage job should pay enough to rent an apartment, afford food and basic needs, and provide a modest entertainment budget.

This is the baseline life that Americans should live. The more you do, the more you should make but anybody who works deserves a living wage and no adult should be forced to have roommates if they dont want to.

I think that it should be dynamic and raise with the current inflation levels. That way when people jack up prices all it does is force minimum wage to increase which means that other jobs have to give raises to compete with minimum wage.

As it stands minimum wage is actually useless.

I think I've seen someone say before that if minimum wage were to have kept up with inflation, it'd be like $35 per hour by now, which would be awesome.

I agree. I dont care what your job is. If you go to work 40 hours a week you should be able to afford your own place and basic things. Thats not much to ask for in the alleged richest country in the world.

Enough to support yourself and have a place to live.

The fact that people can work full-time jobs and still not be able to afford a place to live is fucking ridiculous.

I would rather see a focus on bringing the cost of living down; if necessary by price or profit caps on essentials. Increasing wages only ever works as a temporary band aid.

Minimum wage increases haven't really worked all that well, at least where I am. They help for a little bit, and then costs just adjust upwards and the situation is the same, just with bigger numbers.

Making more money and spending less money accomplish the same goal. Both is the best option.

I dont think its feasible to think companies will actually lower prices. I have little faith in the government but Id put more trust in them than these companies.

The minimum should be whatever it would take to afford the cost of living in the area.

Unless you are in the most wealthy location in the US/whatever country you're in then the two are not connected.

Yeah minimum wage hasnt changed much and prices have gone up. Thats why I never like the prices will go up arguments. Prices go up regardless because of corporate greed.

Only making 50% more than the actual cost of an apartment wouldnt really be enough to afford the apartment.
