No, it is completely insane to not allow winners to remain anonymous

It's pretty silly. I think I've seen people have trust established and have its managers accept it, so seems to be an option in at least some places.

Not always, but a lot. One of the big reasons is people coming out of the woodwork to demand money from you because you have so much now. Being printed in the newspaper makes this even worse, because everyone in the neighborhood is guaranteed to know. And a lot of times con artists will go to lottery winners' houses pretending to be distant relatives or old friends that they haven't seen in a long time. Even if you knew they were lying immediately, imagine how unpleasant it would be to deal with that!

Which is why it is ridiculous and cruel to force winners to be printed--with photos, no less--in the newspaper. Or even worse, go on TV.

Another reason is that most people who win don't know anything about financial planning so they overspend and run out after a few years. For example, they may find themselves with no money in their bank account and a huge mansion with a mortgage they can't pay. So if you do ever win, make sure you have an investment plan and calculate how much you can spend every year without running out.

I had an old co-worker win $200,000 from a scratch-off. His old landlord sued him for stupid stuff and he had ex-girlfriends and family begging him for hand outs. It was a small town of 2k off the highway so people knew about it.

It's supposed to prove that it's not lottery employees who are just choosing themselves as the winners

It seems like a primitive way to "prove" that the lottery is being run in a legit fashion.

There's SO much information now online on what to do when you come into a huge sum of money, and if you live in a state where you MUST reveal you identity, the first step is 100% to lawyer up and setting up an anonymous trust.

Nah. I know an older guy who won $500k off a smaller lottery and immediately lost a leg after from a blood clot so that $500k he won really wound up helping him and his family out.

You could argue that winning the lottery cost him his leg.
