Mutants over Broadway!
Moiety Theme
About That...

By far my favorite part of Rage is the instrumental from 1:48-2:03. I think Id like the song more if it was more focused on the instruments instead of the less interesting vocals.

Voted What I'm Made Of... of course. There are too many good Crush 40 songs I cant decide which one is my favorite. Im looking forward to Live & Learn/Aria Math to see how the result compares to last years xstats.

Rage
Moiety Theme
About That...

I really dislike the vocals in Mutants over Broadway. They have this weird quality that feels like the singer is lurching or stumbling or something, and it just doesn't sound good. The rest of the sound is pretty good, but the song's already a lost cause. Rage is a JRPG-sounding power ballade that falls pretty firmly into the "good but not great" camp and is the clear vote here.

Moiety theme is a solid ambient song with some cool percussion, but doesn't really have a chance at finding its way into my favorites. Wild Woods has some individually cool sounds but the overall thing is a bit too goofy for me. The solo flute part at about the halfway point is very good though.

I don't like About That as much as some of the other Paradise Killer songs, but the combination of booming synth, sax, and 80's sounding vocals is still very good. Round has a very cool effect where it's constantly adding new parts and building on it's self. Great sense of progression but I don't know if it quite has the payoff that I would like. Still a very cool song and would have voted it in any of the other matches.

Rage
Wild Woods
Round

It's very perfect for a new TMNT game, I think. It really nails exactly how vocals should sound in a TMNT game soundtrack even though that hasn't been done before. I like the high synth that rolls scales quietly, and the elements that don't take the focus from the beat but complement it, like the guitar that strums sometimes and the horns that punctuate the ends of sections.

I like the contrast from the first part which sounds very Darren Korb, into the second part at 0:54 which feels very adventurish, and the 6/8 feel along with the chord movement from 1:02 to 1:04 which is one of my favorite chord movemnts is nice. I can't remember the name right now. It's very cool.

I like how easy the pulse is to feel but the downbeat is a little harder to pinpoint, really feels like you're lost in an area. I like the stringsish element that appears at 0:22 hitting on the 3rd and 1st triplets of every beat, and the drums sting at 0:57.

It's no secret that I love this song, but one of my favorite parts is the string eighth notes at 0:18 that lead into the next section. There's lots of lovely little things in this arrangement that take advantage of instruments that aren't in focus (and the fact that it rotates what instruments make up the backing!), like the descending glockenspiel(?) line in the background at 0:39, and all the response lines the recorder does to the melodies. very much cakocore

A bit of an abrupt start, but it's a very solid synthpop track. The sax solo is super cool, but i wish it was mixed a little higher?? I like the vibe of this song a lot, thoughabsolutely nails what it's going for, and I want to dance!! I always enjoy the layered vocal unisons that this song features and the chord choruses are ear candy as well.

The entire FAR: Changing Tides soundtrack is something that I love a lot, carrying over a lot of the very textural and acoustic timbres from the first game. This track in particular uses them for a very simple piece, but the layering of elements on top of each other in succession as the song goes on make it extremely lush. It's a type of minimalism I like a lot. I might like 2:08 the best, where the main melodic line that's been developed gets traded back and forth between two smaller ensembles before coming to a climactic head. Could this explain why I've been liking Colin Stetson's solo work a lot recently, too?

Mutants over Broadway!
Wild Woods
About That...

From TunnelScene:
Rage (MementoMori)
Moiety Theme (Riven)
Round (FAR: Changing Tides)

heh, the lizardmen from Caravan Stories seem to have gotten pretty vibrant.

what an fl81 track, in hindsight

it used to bother me that the music has almost no reference to the number 5 considering how everything else about the game does (some people suspected almost the whole game being in G minor was a ref to it being 5 up from C but Robyn Miller later confirmed the whole thing being in one key was basically unintentional lol). whether intentional or not this does have some great 5th (and 4th) jumping sequences that are precisely my tonal preference. the instrumentation feels so ahead of its time, like on an entire different plane of reality from anything past or present. My favorite video game still holding strong at that position for me going 24 years, I wouldn't change a thing about it. This track is a wonderful reward for solving what many consider one of the most obtuse puzzles in the series, with some pretty striking visuals. but even without the context of seeing Please Insert Riven Disk 5 for the first time after being endlessly stuck on disk1-4---this track just weridly tightly does exactly what i want to hear both in timbre & tonality, and has somehow never gotten old.

well what a coincidence. a song in 5, going against teh game about ze number 5

um, hello? it's 2024, the current year. really? *does something people in 2024 think people did in 1984*, literally 1984.

if this song were played on teh E-mu Proteus MPS Plus Orchestral itcwould sound like Milo but instead it sounds like some random wine glass kaonashi ONE and player ZERO would drink at teh elite private winery

MementoMori - Rage
Mario Kart 8 - Wild Woods
Paradise Killer - About That...

MATCH 1

Mutants over Broadway is fine, but I preferred the one from last year, Panic in the Sky. I like Mutants over Broadway the most during the chorus part where it has those backing instruments that feel like an homage to the TMNT IV: Turtles in Time soundtrack, which has some pretty cool songs on it, so I'm all for that!

Rage is pretty cool! The vocals + orchestra combination is pretty good here, especially with the other instruments that get thrown into the mix here and there. But my favorite part is definitely the one at 0:54. The melody here is definitely more my thing during this part, which makes an already good song even better. This was my runner-up for the A1 retirement spot and had a very easy run there.

MATCH 2

Moiety Theme is okay. I don't dislike it, but it's not my kind of song either.

Wild Woods is dececnt. Not the best song up today, but I have a clear preference over its opponent. It has a nice enough melody that I can sort of get into, especially with the flute. I feel like I enjoy that first second of the song the most? Maybe it's just that my brain thinks it's going to turn into an Atelier song or something lol.

MATCH 3

About That brings some of that cool funky jazziness that the other Paradise Killer songs have shown, and it's just as good if not better than this game's past entries! Really just a catchy vocal song overall, and that's always a good way to win me over with a song.

Round is really nice too! The main flute motif creates an interesting atmosphere. Something like exploration and this vastness of the environment you're in. And the progressive increase in the complexity of the song only adds to that. Another unfortunate draw here too.

Mutants over Broadway!
Wild Woods
About That...

Cheesiness usually works for me about 80% of the time, so Mutants is definitely up my alley for this one. It's just pure fun and silly in its rap and synth work, I adore it.

I remember not liking Rage too much back during nominations, though I guess I forgot how much the vocals pop out to me this time around. I think it's the instruments that feel all over the place for me, I kinda wish it decided what it wanted to be and focus on either the Celtic or orchestra aspect. Alright song overall.

There's some neat ambiance with Moeity, though it does seem to blend together and not stand out as well in my mind.

I don't remember MK8 music all that well (should probably pick up all the DLC), but Wild Woods is very fun! It's a pretty cute forest song with enough spirit in its step. The strings and woodwind are certainly pulling their weight on this one.

Nothing has ever touched my heard from the Paradise Killer soundtrack like Paradise (Stay Forever) ever did, though To the Heart and now this has been the closest to reaching those lofty heights. This is just some really good 80s pop to put on a CD/cassette, with fun vocals, good synths and even that classic sax solo to boot.

Round is a really nice pick, the progression it has is easily what intrigues me the most about it. It's half-cozy and half-adventurous, a combo I don't think I've found in music yet! It's also overall very soothing to me, I'm definitely saving this one for future listens.
