YIMBY in the US is primarily about increasing the ability and willingness to build housing all over the country. Seems really bad to try and tie that money to Gaza. The war is horrible in Gaza, yet trying to tie it into a very specific domestic based movement is just going to negatively impact the movement, especially when the war is...well so partisan. You don't want to tie down housing issues in the US with housing issues in a completely different continent.

The article is getting a lot of push back from what I'm seeing so that's good. But man, you really have to keep various movements and organization laser focused on a singular goal and avoid deviating.

It's useless pearl-clutching from people who don't actually care about Gaza, used exclusively to try to silence protest about issues they'd rather leave unaddressed.

Is there really a need to tie everything into Gaza? I get that solidarity does matter, but how about doing things in a way that's more pragmatic and less ham-fisted?

I think you're misreading this. The person is saying that the housing movement should be making statements about Gaza, and that Gaza should become more prominent in their messaging.

Yep. You don't want to turn every cause into an "omnicause". Keep organizations and their goals laser focused on the topic. It's hard enough to make people agree with laws to increase housing, why even bring the salience of the war into the conversation.

In the end, people like this are just trying to blame the Jewish community without just coming out and saying it. Which really is no better then accusing them of having magic space lasers.

When it comes to empathy for the Palestinian families displaced using our tax dollars, Americas humanity falters as does the humanity that I know drives those of us in the urbanism and housing advocacy space.

Its particularly tough to swallow given that every dollar funding bombs abroad is a dollar not used to house people at home. Rather than committing the billions of dollars needed to boost affordable housing production and other proven government programs that desperately need.

A person unhoused anywhere is a crime against humanity and is a deliberate policy choice, whether or not we like to admit it. federal funding, our government is choosing to enrich the military-industrial complex and fund what human rights organizations and international legal experts have credibly described as a genocide.

I get what the person is trying to say, I just think they're wrong. Even if we weren't selling weapons to Israel, it's not as if that money would then be flowed to cities to build homes.

Ultimately, it just brings a very divisive issue into housing

Really doesn't feel like it.

Leftists and people who get really into one issue tend to think that "disconnected" struggles are connected and that people who see the right way on one thing should see it on others and speak out.

That's the mindset here. I doubt very much that this is about blaming Jewish people as one poster said.

They are going further and saying that if you are not talking about it, you are complicit in the destruction.

As someone who thinks both of these things are major problems; they are not connected and solving one is entirely independent of solving the other. Linking them is dumb in any context other than pointing out someone is especially bad for having shitty stances on both issues.

Let that sink in. The US homeless rate is like a fraction of a percent. Syria for instance is 30%.
