I had a thing that would go in the back like Gameshark would that when combined with a spring to make it think the lid was always closed would let you swap out discs to play Japanese games.

Huh, I still have it in the closet actually. Was called "Gamehunter"

I had a mod chip that plugged into the back of the system. Id need to put in a legit disc first, it would read it, then Id need to open the system and replace the legit game with a burnt CD.

Topic made me want to know that too. Best I can find is people suggesting Sony was going to use the parallel port for expansions, controllers, or a modem but never actually did so.

Most likely a case of better include one in case we, or somebody else, needs one in the future.
I mean, everybody had extra ports back then. Nintendo, Sega, Nec, Atari...

I had to turn mine upside down for it to read discs. Does that count?

Yup and as time went on, they removed it in later revisions of the console which other companies did for their consoles as well.

I traded in my newer PS1 for an older model at a FuncoLand in order to take advantage of that port

Yep. That was part of the reason the Dreamcast failed. Sega fucked up and didn't include any copy protection.

That was a very small part of why it failed. Sega's previous fuck ups already set the stage for them by the time they released the Dreamcast.

Ours was called the 'MINI GOLDFINGER' and we used it to play all the DBZ games that were out. ESPECIALLY Legends.

Fun fact; the first batch(es) of the first revision that removed that port had a fully working port behind the plastic shell. They re-used old leftover motherboards instead of scrapping them.

No, but my friend had some type of device that plugged in the back and let you hack games. It was cool, but I can't remember what it was. Maybe a Gameshark or something, but I'm not sure

I only ever had the slim PS1.

I had the same, where you had to swap out a regular game with a copy of a game to get it to work.

Amazon used to have it's own auction site, and I would get games for $5 each. It was awesome.

I did. My grandparents bought it while overseas, they were told at the shop that the (very cheap) games from there wouldn't run on our PS1 and we had to get a new one. Which in fairness would have been true even if it was just a region thing, but the PS1 they sold was chipped and the games were copies (even I only realized this much later).

Had mine chipped by a mate of a mate.
Wasn't really worth it tbh.

Yes I got to play MSG before the European release (often a long wait back then), but it turned out to be quite difficult to make much progress when you don't speak Japanese, and consequentially have no idea where you're supposed to be going or what you're supposed to be doing.
