Yeah they were done. This company is full of cowards that know their game doesn't work.

Back in the day, I only played them because of a lack of better options. Now that I have them I have no interest in the genre.

This, Warhammer 3 is currently still releasing dlc.

There are a few other more indie games along these lines, but the genre has faded a lot and isn't getting very much anymore.

The genre died due to MOBA games like League of Legends, and the only ones remaining are established ones like Age of Empires and Starcraft.

A shame really. When I grew up in the 90s RTS games were a dime a dozen and almost every developer tried for jump on the bandwagon. Some of my favorites include Company of Heroes, Dark Reign, Dawn of War, Empire Earth, Red Alert 2, Rise of Nations, Supreme Commander, and Total Annihilation.

Homeworld 3 just came out.

I also saw something about a new Command and Conquer game but it sounds bad and looks like it's a mobile title?

StarCraft 2 is better than it has ever been for watching pro play (I highly recommend the caster WinterStarcraft) but I dont actually play it myself anymore. Not sure how healthy the casual player base is these days.

In trying to find info about the C&C game I read about (was it literally just a dream?), I did find they are making a spiritual successor called Tempest Rising that got favorable reviews during play testing.

Still pisses me off how EA killed the series. First they release Tiberian Twilight, a MOBA-style entry that nobody asked for, then they made Generals 2 free to play. Now all that remains of the series are some Clash of Clans-style mobile games.

I grew up on several RTS games in the late nineties. Dune 2000, several Command & Conquer games, StarCraft 1, Warcraft 3, Emperor: Battle for Dune, Age of Empire 2, etc. It's sad the state of RTS nowadays. I never got really good at this genre, nor do I play competitively like some players do, but I always revisited the genre and look for new RTS games now and then. I just find building up your base and army, and coming up with a strategy to attack the enemy's base while defending your own in campaign mode to be pretty fun.

I don't know why. I find watching competitive StarCraft 1 matches on ArtosisCasts more enjoyable than StarCraft 2 lately. It might be because it's my first love and I like the old RTS, but I'll check out Winter StarCraft sometime.

Neat. I'll have to put that game on my radar, along with StormGate.

I wouldn't say it's dead but it's a very niche genre that days. Even at the casual level. Against the Storm is probably the most successful one in a long time.

They've killed/harmed plenty of my favorite franchises and studios. EA can go to hell.

After playing the Civilization series, it made me realise I much prefer turn-based strategy. I haven't gone back to real-time since then.

I think there's still interest, but developers don't seem to know how to make them anymore. Hopefully D.O.R.F. ends up having a good campaign.

Isn't that one, StormGate, still in the open beta testing phase? I'm sure they'll get the balancing issues fixed over time, and last I heard we only have 2 races and Tier 3 buildings & units to play with.

The AOE2 remaster is still better IMO. The biggest problem with the SC1 remaster is that they didn't add much gameplay changes in order to maintain full compatibility with the original CD version.
