For the sake of families, we should enact legislation to remove or radically reduce incidences of no-fault divorce, Carson writes in The Perilous Fight, released Tuesday.

The reason this matters is that no-fault divorce legally allows marriages to end much more quickly than in previous decades. When there are relatively few legal or financial consequences connected with divorce, its natural for people to gravitate toward that option when their marriage hits a rough patch, he adds. What those people often dont consider, however, is the harm both present and future inflicted on their children once a divorce is finalized.

Once again, Republicans are openly confessing their desire strip women of autonomy; and naturally they're using "think of the children" as a pretext to do so.

All Im reading is republicans making sure people stay miserable and that they cant escape from their abusers. As for the kids, every phycologist will tell you that a toxic environment is worse than divorce and they'll be fine as long as both parents are present.

No fault divorce led to a reduction in female suicide rates, so naturally Christo-fascists want to end it because women must feel trapped and shackled to them as though they are property.

For sure. Staying married "for the sake of the kids" only serves to help guarantee a toxic environment. They just don't want single moms with agency.

The people insisting a married man and woman who hate one another should be forced to remain married are the same people who say two men or two women who love each other shouldn't be allowed to marry.

Yeah him & JK Rowling are the 2 names that come quickest to mind when I think about "thoroughly destroyed their good reputation for right-wing extremist bullshit". If Dr. Oz was more legitimate before he tried to become a Senator then he'd be in the running, but lol Oz even before that.

To be as smart as Ben Carson claims he is he is certainly a moron about a lot of issues.

But this is to be expected from people who put religion above all else.

I feel that instead of banning divorce we should be telling young couples to not get married until they're 100% sure that's what they want. There is a reason that 50% of marriages end in divorce and it's this country's need to rush couples into a marriage because "it's the right thing to do" rather then let them make the decision for themselves.

As a child of a "staying together for the kids marriage" that finally exploded when I was 18, I was damaged way more by the staying together than the divorce itself. Messy, acrimonious divorce can obviously have a negative effect of a child's development, but then so can messy, acrimonious marriage.

This. Not good for families, not good for anyone.

Not a new revelation, but for a party that used to be obsessed with small government (before the only policy position became Trump worship), the GOP sure cant seem to stay away from everyones deeply personal business.

Here is an idea: How about the government provide for basic health, safety and opportunity for all and then get the hell out of the way and let us live our lives?

Let's pretend for a second that he's right, which he's not, but let's pretend. Divorce rates are very lopsided towards older couples. Boomers are the ones that got into multiple marriages and got divorced multiple times. Gen X less so. Millennials started the trend of waiting until they were older to marry and then for the most part not getting divorced. Zoomers seem to be following that trend.

The stats are very uneven. The highest divorce rates are from people 65+. Their children are largely already adults who may also be married. He's fighting a made up boogeyman

He doesn't actually mean children, he means the ex-husband has to pay a bunch of alimony and that's not good for the men, especially the rich Republican donors. He's just using children in the sense that Republicans always use "won't somebody please think of the children!" as a reason for almost every shitty thing they do to society.

Duncan, just because you're completely incapable of making informed decisions for yourself doesn't mean everyone else is too.

Which is fucking insane. Keeping children in a household, as any child who had parents who should have divorced years ago would attest, is abusive. It is much much worse for the children in the long run then splitting up
