I was always a TFA hater. There's a thousand problems with its plot and the excuse people said contemporaneously was "fine but they have two more movies to explain that so it doesn't matter". A very literal example is Maz's infamous "A good story, for another time".

But also like literally everything about the map plot makes zero sense. I felt like I was taking crazy pills after watching the movie and no one except me was asking who the old guy at the beginning of the movie was and how and why he had the map. Or why R2D2 came out of his robo-depression-coma at the end of the movie with the final piece of the map. Because it is literally not explained in the movie why and how any of this is happening, and it'll only make sense if you read an extended interview with JJ Abrams on the internet to learn that R2 downloaded the map coordinates from the Death Star in Episode 4 on accident and BB-8 beeping at R2 in Act 2 of the movie triggered a delayed response for R2 to wake from his depression coma at the very end of the movie.

I think the movie, contemporaneously, benefitted from Episode 1 syndrome where everyone immediately leaving the theater was just hyped that Star Wars was back. The specific details could be ignored. And only after the mania wore off everyone realized in both cases the movies weren't actually very good and movies 2 and 3 in the trilogy wouldn't fix the problems.

TFA was okay at first. A bit too safe since its almost a remake of the og movie. It was just made retroactively worse by the next films since all the storylines they planted amounted to nothing.

I never liked TFA, myself, and even said as much when it released. At least one or two people on this site told me that I was an EU lover that couldn't handle the fact that it wasn't the same story because I said it didn't feel like Star Wars to me. I was never outspoken about it, either, beyond that comment, so I wasn't thrilled by the rabid defenders. I'm definitely not one of the people you see complaining about it to this day, either; I moved on from the series a long time ago (though I still enjoy reading about the older lore from time to time).

And the problem I have with people saying TFA gets a pass because it's more or less a remake of the original is that it's not a standalone story in a different universe - it takes place in the same one, years after the bright, hopeful ending we got in RotJ, and it pretty much dumps all over it and the old heroes and resets everything back to how it was in A New Hope. We all know how the next two movies went, too, so I won't even go there.

I'll still take TFA over the PT any day. A good SW movie has Harrison Ford playing Han Solo.

It was fun to see the original 70s aesthetic in a new SW movie so I was appreciative of that. But the story was always shit.

TFA was an intro.

An intro can appear good until you find out it is introducing dog poop.

This is like saying people liked the trailer of a movie and they watch the movie how can they change their mind?

Yes. People got so god damn butthurt over that movie for some reason they decided the whole sequel era is irredeemable garbage, and that the fucking prequel trilogy is actually good. I don't know what this movie did to people but for their brains to become that twisted is something else.

TFA was fine, it was a good movie to set up a trilogy. The fact that NOTHING came of all the set up though makes it significantly worse. Basically, how good TFA would end up being depends greatly on how the rest of the trilogy went and well the rest was a god damn clown show.

TFA was fine.

Walking out of the theater, I actually ranked it the second-best Star Wars movie. Maybe fourth now after Rogue One and a rewatch of ANH. But certainly better than RotJ, any of the prequels or the rest of the ST.

And frankly, Solo is kinda overrated. It's not bad or anything but near the end I just don't care about the charity or orphanage or school or whatever it was. I dunno, I only watched it once and I didn't care enough to take note of what it was. I just wanted that part to end but it suddenly became the whole movie for some reason.

This is more or less how I felt. It was fine as a building block but it ultimately failed to build into anything.

Basically RoS impacted the other two films negatively.

Is it really overrated in that case? Your opinion seems fairly close to the consensus.

When it first came out people did generally love it because there was a lot of potential, it set things up great. Then Last Jedi released and burned it all to the ground.

At the time it felt like a good proof of concept; A new Stat Wars movie by a mostly new team that got the general vibe of Star Wars down, even if it was mostly through cribbing their notes. I realized lots of new beginnings sometimes homage old stuff got to get people on board and was looking forward to the next film building on thus in new directions... which didn't happen exactly as I expected.

TLJ really exposes all the weaknesses in TFA, specifically in how it's just pure setup that left a bunch of questions to be answered later, and the only plot it actually had for itself was just a remake of ANH.

Of course, TLJ then made things worse by making it so every answer to TFA's questions were "it doesn't matter lol" because I guess Johnson just forgot there was going to be a third movie and he had to leave Abrams SOMETHING to work with.
