Started Pikmin 4 today, my first Pikmin game. Its basically Engineering: The Game, trying to get all the shinies and materials as efficiently as possible. I understand it doesnt actually matter how much you get done in one day, but I cant help myself.

Not sure if it would be worth it going back to Pikmin 1-3 after this, since I presume 4 builds upon the mechanics in those games. Ive got too big a backlog to play 4 similar Pikmin games anyway; I think Ill get the gist from just playing 4.

It's not really worth going back to 1, 2 is still vaguely worth it so maybe look into that one, and I missed on 3 but I've heard it's still worth going back to.

And look into Oddsparks for a similar-ish game (Pikmin with factory-building).

4 is more a continuation of 2 thematically, though it does have an Olimar mode thats basically a redux of 1. 3 plays fairly differently from 4 since you have 3 captains and a dodge roll. I liked 4 but Oatchi kinda overshadowed the Pikmin with how useful he was.

Tbh I like 1 better then 2. I like the time limited melancoly and the BS parts feel less spiteful.

Def best to play 1 before 4 if you ever decide to play though. 1 is pretty jank and unforgiving in comparison.

theres still a lot to enjoy with previous games but I do think it might be tough if you played 4 first

Theres just something so therapeutic about having those little fuckers run back and forth carrying a bunch of junk.

I think they removed a lot of the stuff that I found off putting about the first game which was mostly the time limit stuff. Game just felt a bit too rushed to be enjoyed. Without that though I could definitely sense a lack of urgency for a challenge that some people enjoy more.

I agree with the first part wholeheartedly, its basically the ultimate pikmin game and Im always interested in what new players think of the difficulty. I thought it was too easy but Ive been playing the games for 20 years so maybe Im not an objective judge on it.

i do think the others are worth playing if youre really enjoying 4. 2 would be the most similar to 4 as far as structure goes, as youre looking for treasure and have a bunch of multilevel caves to explore. It also has two captains similarish to 4.

1 has a 30 day time limit but its not as stressful as a lot of people think, especially if it isnt your first pikmin. 3 has a day limit based on the amount of food you find, but its not really stressful aside from one moment. The three captains also dramatically change how efficient you can be in gathering food and completing objectives. The switch versions campaign can be local co-op too so if you have somebody to play with its a lot of fun.

I prefer 1 as well, but it aged a lot worse than 2. Heck, 4 just flat out basically comes with a little mini-campaign as a side deal that is just 1 with some updates in it.

3 is still my favorite, but I've played it so much over the years that 4 is my new go-to when I get the Pikmin itch. They're all great games, though. I'm honestly "meh" on how 2 and 4's caves are implemented; they interrupt the flow of the day for me. I would have preferred it if you could do caving expeditions independent of the normal day cycle, kind of like how 4 handles night missions. Caves are still a lot of fun regardless.
