I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

The tournament has now begun. The discussion topic is here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80744044 and the bracket is here: https://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=478370

Finishing out the quarterfinals, we have a type match-up that seems like a blowout in-game, but we're not talking game mechanics here. Gen V Bug came into this tournament as the overall two-seed, while Gen I Flying only managed tenth. However, Gen V has not gotten to the final four yet, while Gen I has. Will Gen I tie things up going up against a pair of Gen III semifinalists, or will Gen V have an entrant of its own competing for the grand prize?

gen 1 flying's roster really showcases how it was actively designed more as a... modifier than a proper type lol

in an alternate reality, they honestly could've turned it into an ability instead lol

Eh, Gyarados is the only one that really shouldn't be a Flying type. Maybe Scyther, but I think Scyther being part-Flying is fine if you ignore its evos.

But yeah, take away Gyarados and Scyther and I'd have to think about this one a lot harder instead of it being a slam dunk for Gen 1 Flying.

Again, my personal opinion is that Gen I Flying has no duds, while Gen V Bug still has the problem where the unevolved forms are really not great.

Gen V has some amazing Bugs and is very representative of a Bug type.

Gen I Flying, I agree with JC, is definitely double-dipping with a lot of them, but it's such an amazing lineup.

i legitimately don't understand the appeal in gen 1 flying. it is seriously carried by gyarados and scyther to me. maybe butterfree and 2/3rds of the legendary birds.

but literally .... every bug absolutely kills it, except for accelgor maybe. which i would probably like more if it wasn't a fucking trade evolution

Joltik, Dwebble, and Swadloon are some actual S-tier unevolved Buggos. Larvesta is a cutie, and I'm just gonna come out and say it: I like Sewaddle more than Caterpie. Don't @ me.

Although thinking about this more, maybe I see your point. It might've been better if instead of a Flying type we had a Wind type and the following was the case:
  • All current Normal/Flying and pure Flying Pokemon are now pure Wind.
  • Evolutions of Wind Pokemon can also be part Wind (e.g. Talonflame, Corviknight, etc.)
  • Other than that, be fairly stingy about what other Pokemon are Wind type. e.g. Rotom-Fan makes sense as Wind type, as does Rayquaza since wind and air are a large part of its theme, but stuff like Aerodactyl and Salamence shouldn't necessarily automatically be Wind type just because they have wings.
  • All other former Flying Pokemon and Pokemon which have Levitate get a free "Flying" attribute which make them immune to ground and doesn't take up a type or ability slot.
