And is it this game?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2384730/Beyond_the_Ice_Palace_2/

Original is from 1988. Assuming this comes out next year (and I don't think it's ready for '24,) that's 37 years.

EDIT: I googled it

Getsu Fuma Den and Getsu Fuma Den: Undying Moon. 35 year gap

That's gotta be the record

video game sequel gaps always fascinate me. sometimes you know why they revived a franchise, like shenmue 3 was obviously a big push that was made for years. but sometimes it's like "oh shit why NOW?" like with Pokemon Snap 2, years after people stopped asking for it. They could have done it on the 3DS but they didn't, then it just randomly happens on the switch

was going to guess bokosuka wars (1983-2016, so 33 years) but obviously this game would beat that. you could technically say Hebereke/Ufouria is up there as well as long as you put aside every spinoff (1991-2024, a little under 33 years)

And Penguin-kun wars also pretty high up there (1988-2017 from penguin wars 2 to the reboot, so 28 years)

actually arguably i suppose you could count the shooting minigame in 1-2-Switch as a "sequel" to Wild Gunman if you're generous enough, and that would effectively be... around 42 or 43 years (if counting from the 1974 arcade release)

It's a remake rather than a sequel (although there are no direct sequels between them), but I offer Colossal Cave VR:
https://www.gog.com/en/game/colossal_cave_vr

Timing the 'release' of early text adventures is iffy, as they tend to have been long-term projects on university mainframes with numerous tweaked versions over several years, but its origin is generally given as 1976, making the 2023 version 47 years later.

I wouldn't count that one anyway since Link to the Past got a more chronologically direct sequel 2 years after its release: Link's Awakening.

Colossal Cave Adventure feels like the kind of game that would have had a sequel at some point along the way. I'm amazed it never did. And this version's being developed by Roberta Williams?

Combat Two sounds like the king of vaporware. I'm surprised with all the junk Atari produced in the mid-80s that they wouldn't follow through with the sequel to one of their most signature games. (For home console, I mean.)

So just when I thought 37 might take it, y'all go and drop two titles that are a decade longer. For a second, I thought Pong -> Qomp might surpass that at 49, but there are already official pong sequels. Quite a few, actually. They just aren't called "Pong 2."

What, then, is the oldest game to never receive a sequel? And do we try to preclude games with blatantly derivative titles from other companies, or is that too nebulous to define? (Spacewar! was cloned numerous times throughout the 70s, i.e., including an Atari game legit called Space War.)

It seems like it also got a prior XBLA reboot in the mold of Starfox or Panzer Dragoon, confusingly named Yar's Revenge, which this new one shares plot elements with. But that one flopped.
