Is the second character an actual example or hypothetical, because I don't really get where you're going with Light.

It's actually more an example that people lack basic media literacy no different than some of the braindead takes I've heard about Walter White as both are without question the main antagonists of their own stories. Near was 100% correct in his conclusion that Light is just a mass murderer who got drunk on the power of the Death Note, and the moment he wrote Lind L Taylor's name in the Death Note out of spite was when he proved this.

Whenever I finish a piece of media, I check its entry for neat things I missed out/didn't pick up on

Whenever I hear about/read about something I haven't heard of before, I check its page to see what it is. Especially for video games, it explains them much better than something like Wikipedia, while being much more concise than a review. That's its value to me

This, it has some uses. I constantly see threads similar to "are there any series where you end up fighting the protagonist of the previous entry???" and the site sorts them by type of media if you're looking for that sort of thing.

It was an actual character in a work that the thread voted on. It was 1 to 2 years ago so I wouldn't be able to find it but if you've lurked those threads for any length you'd regularly see mass murdering villains like this responsible for dozens to millions of deaths dropped because of some minor signs of genuine love somewhere or a pet the dog moment or not being as bad as even worse villains. These are of course not things people outside the site would consider to automatically override any amount of heinousness.

Seen people do that for much less.

I kinda like looking at the YMMV page to see what insights I could get on something I just consumed. Sometimes, seeing other perspectives can make me think about things in different ways.
The site is otherwise just kinda trash. It's a bunch of obsessives who want to label and categorize everything even when it doesn't fit, openly stretching definitions or even saying that something is "averted" or "inverted" just so they can make the tropes list bigger. People who want to control language with their stupid inside-jokey terminology. It's crazy how often "some people think" is used to mask some isolated person's vent or bad opinion about something.

What are you talking about?

Could be me misinterpreting what you were saying, but I seen people actively downplaying a character's heinousness for reasons worse than "not a complete asshole, just 99%". And it might vary case by case, but I don't think whether or not a character is labeled a Complete Monster is stance on how bad their actions are. I can get the issue with not including Made of Evil characters, but there's a point regarding agency.

TV Tropes is good for looking up tropes in media, but dont look up games in certain genres. The Souls-like RPG page has so many games on it that arent souls-like at all.

How are Metroid and Onimusha Souls-like?

That something that existed before tvtropes and still happens without it. Pretty sure Talk no Jutsu wasn't a tvtropes invention, but it tends to pop up almost anywhere outside it's specific sphere. Tvtropes just tends to be a convenient for it I guess.

Tropes have been a thing since the dawn of humanity and simply describe ways of storytelling.

TV tropes simply gives a more concise amalgamation of information that was previously exclusive to different groups (fandoms and genre critics mostly). It isn't to be taken that seriously but can give a decent insight into certain ideas.

No one wants to continually explain why some element of a media property resonates with them or why it is poor storytelling and tropes are one way to short hand the explanation.

One of the reasons tropes exist is to do exactly what you are describing, which is take the burden of explanations off the person who knows what they are talking about and onto the person who doesn't.

I'm saying nobody outside of Tvtropes has all their little technicalities and criteria such as any amount of supposed genuine care, how much resources they have, how off-screen their actions are to describe monstrous evil villains. It's pretty easy to note when a villain is supposed to be monstrously evil that the fanbase also feels that "actually he once had a pet mouse he didn't kill" doesn't override.

People can have personal feelings for a character but they generally acknowledge that.

That heavily depends on the person.

A fandom's general consensus is much easier to realize if a character is seen as monstrously evil or not.

Also heavily depends on the fandom. I've been in various "X was right" arguments to understand that you can very much have a clear section of a fanbase that can and will lionize some of the worst characters of a work or downplay how bad a character's actions are despite how clear cut it's in the story itself. It can get worse when the story isn't constantly slapping in the face with how heinous a character is.

TV tropes is trash and just contributes to media illiteracy. Yes, tropes exist but are more building blocks than anything. Theyre not cliches like so many people say.

Its all about trying to categorise everything, even if it doesnt make sense to the point where they go oh wow these two people from these two different media get angry after someone dies! Is that really worth pointing out and labelling?

TV Tropes does have a habit of locking down and institute a "no real life examples" policy, which can be both good and bad. For instance, the page on Donald Trump is locked from editing, only mentions that he was the US President from 2016-20, and goes through none of his presidential controversies. The page on DSP was also deleted due to it being used to complain about him.

Here are some interesting reads on deleted tropes and works banned from the site, largely due to NSFW content like Bible Black and Boku No Pico.

Are you part of that thread? You're shilling for them so hard it's hard to imagine you're doing so without having a personal stake in it yet you seem ignorant of the stuff that have went down there. Going "u-um anyone can be like that" doesn't matter. The point is they're nitpicky and pedantic about their arbitrary and detached technicalities beyond what most rational viewers are which drove them to create an insulated culture filled with unfriendly cliques. And this isn't even me. This is what they themselves acknowledged on the header of their first thread.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=6vic3f9h1cy5qivsenw8llok

Oh goody we're at this part of the discussion. Not sure how I'm shilling for them by pointing out some fandoms don't have a clear consensus on certain characters, particularly when you yourself seem against an example because it's "debatable". The point I was raising with Light wasn't even a matter of whether or not I agree with him being a Complete Monster, but that their interpretation is something that exists outside their insulated culture. Then there's my personal experience in that I've come across takes that easily differ simply based of what site I'm on, for example I've been massively downvoted on Reddit for saying I don't like particular characters whereas elsewhere the reaction them can noticeably more mixed.
