in the US, we have recycle centers where people can collect bottles and bring them in for some money.

it's a few cents for each bottle.

5 cents a can in most states that do it, 10 cents in my state and a few others. I think California does it by weight? They did in the 90s/early 2000s at least.

Here it's 25 cents for most bottles, 8 cents for cans and 15 cents for small glass bottles

Tbh sometimes when I walk home from work and I know I'm hitting the grocery store before making it home, I look around for discarded bottles and cans on the way so I can like, get a package of lunch meat or bread without paying.

It is kinda amazing and fucked that cans and bottles are basically worthless yet worth something in a sense.

In Europe (and South Korea) when you use a shopping cart at a grocery store you put a coin in a slot to unlock it, then when you return the cart you lock it and get the coin back.

Here in New Zealand they don't do that, then act surprised when all the shopping carts end up at the bottom of the river.

Theyre going to outlaw this where I live.

I dunno how widespread it is, but a local 7/11 has it so that if you buy a bottled drink, you have to pay an additional 5-10 cents, depending on its size.
