Piper and her brat sister?

Feels like they would be prime targets to be replaced by Synths. Especially Piper who wanders off alone all the time

They replace random farmers and Goodneighbour NPCS but not actual threats

They're not exactly the best written FO faction. I guess they somehow didn't see them as a threat somehow?

Maybe she is a synth!

Because bad writing tbh, even if they didn't replace her they could easily just kill her anytime she's in the wasteland. I'm not 100% of what the institutes motivations are with synths in the first place

Because replacing her does no good for the institute. She's not even really a threat. If they replaced her, and she suddenly stops writing articles about the institute... her readers are going to jump to the conclusion she's been replaced.

Replacing her would be super suspicious, people would notice if she out of nowhere stopped caring about synths.

Killing her is probably a better option, but they don't want to just send synths into the city to assassinate her since that would just make her views more popular. So they needed to make it look natural, probably why the mayor would not let her back into town.

The other thing they seemed to try to do is discredit her, make it seem just like Crack pot theories. In theory that would probably be the best course of action, but they kinda fucked that up by not investigating missing people. The institute run government of Diamond city looks way to suspicious with that. They should at least give fake reasons people went missing

The Institute has no desire to interfere in the unimportant details of your daily lives. They simply ask that you do not interfere with Institute operations. To do so would result in dire consequences.

They literally did this with the Mayor and no one cared

Pipers entire personality is based around that Frustration

All a synth needs to do is change her stories to attacking the BOS or Railroad and no one would notice the difference

They replaced Mayor McDonnough before he ever became Mayor. So nobody would notice the 'changes' except Hancock.

Eh, I'll go to certain lengths to defend Fallout 4, but it's hard to paint the Institute as anything more than a pack of cloistered nerds who have no goal / collective thought process beyond maintaining a perpetual loop of making shit and fucking shit up on the surface; basically an unfunny, underdeveloped Think Tank than takes themselves way too seriously.

Damn shame too, because there was a lot of potential there with some even half-decent writing. Even something as relatively simple as having the option to bring Curie before Father and morally convince him that synths are capable of feeling / inspiration would've made a huge difference.

You're right, that's my fault, making a good faith post in a UR Fallout topic and all.

I think it's more that she's a small-timer than a real threat. I mean, people would definitely notice if she suddenly changed her tune or target, as you'd expect an Institute plot to do. Let's not forget: the first time you're in Diamond City, a dude literally gets his head blown into a thousand pieces right by the noodle stand due to a synth-related accusation and everyone huddles around like it's Old World pay-per-view.

I think it's more that she's a small-timer than a real threat.

You have to go out of your way to do a Fallout 4 playthrough were Piper isn't instrumental in the Insitute being taken down.

You'd have to avoid Diamond City, psychically know to go to Nick, go "lalalalalalalala I'm not listening" when Piper and Nick discuss the memory den and then leave her in her dump of a house.

Outside of factions like the BOS and Railroad, I can't think of a person in Fallout 4 who is a bigger threat than Piper (Other than the Sole Survivor of course) and they are defo aware of her. The mayor is constantly butting heads with her and even trying to get her locked out of the city.

I mean, people would definitely notice if she suddenly changed her tune or target, as you'd expect an Institute plot to do.

I don't think they would. She suddenly wrote a story about frozen dinner guy and no one blinked an eye. So why would they freak out if she started writing shit about the giant military ship in the sky or started linking the missing people to the Railroad?

She wouldn't even need to be a full on Insitute PR spokesperson. They can just control what she does report on. Just like modern news:
