It was a good game. It wasn't as great a game as either of the two former ones, but it's different and unique enough and still has the best story of all the games.

Too short and the gameplay was extremely basic, but it still had the Paper Mario charm and storytelling.

Best story of all the Paper Mario games.

I didn't love the gameplay anywhere near as much as the first two, so at the time I was pretty harsh on it, but it definitely plays better than Sticker Star and Colour Splash, so my stance has softened a bit.

The original, Origami King and especially TTYD all have it beat though, in my eyes.

It is. They went a step too far making it not even resemble the Mario universe. The thing I love about the first two games is that all the original species (clubbas, duplighosts, clefts, etc.) feel like they belong in a Mario game. all the original characters in SPM do not.

Honestly, the flowery, and at times poetic, storytelling and exotic visuals give SPM the air of "an artsy indie game that just happens to star Mario" the more I think about it.

I'd call it bad Mario fanfiction, but honestly fanfiction would have more respect for the source material

What specifically is your beef with it?

It's just a cogent story of loss and friendship. It's not exactly rocket science.

Aside from the character designs, I don't have a problem. I just want to know why people say things like "best story in the series".

I remember loving the hell out of it, but it's very different from the first two games. If you're a big fan of how the N64 game and The Thousand-Year Door played, it might not necessarily be your cup of tea.

Well, I mean... It's the best story in the series. Like every other game just has a basic by the numbers story with some good elements in it, like TEC.

Meanwhile every chapter in SPM teases you just that little bit before the reveal of who's story you're reading about and it's a genuine gut punch.

SPM still uses the standard "collect 7 magic items to open a path" storyline that the other games do. The individual stories of each chapter are way more interesting in 64 and TTYD. I don't' remember a single thing that happened in caveman land, or space land, or heaven and hell land.
SPM has exactly one good chapter, which is the one with the mansion

Yes, it's not the overarching plot, it's the characters within it. Namely Bleck and Tippi

If you're a fan of more character rich writing, then SPM clears TTYD and N64.

It's atrocious in basically every aspect of gameplay. The story is fine, but it constantly gets elevated to the pinnacle of storytelling in games and it is absolutely nowhere near that.

To be fair, it technically is its own thing.

"Super Paper Mario" is technically a different series than "Paper Mario."

Like how "Super Mario Bros" is different than "New Super Mario Bros."

I get your point, I'm posting about technicalities, but... They did name it that way in order to indicate that the gameplay style wasn't the direction the traditional Paper Mario series was going to go in.

Well, it's not technically its own series since it only has one game, but it's not in the same lore timeline as the other Paper Mario games. Super Paper Mario, within its own universe, explicitly states that it's a pure 2D universe, being able to "flip" into 3D is an incredibly new/weird thing to the beings within Super Paper Mario, while it's a very established thing within the Paper Mario world. Super Paper Mario is a similar timeline, but not the same.

Nintendo also tends to be very deliberate about things like this, when it comes to name. For example, Paper Jam is explicitly a "Mario & Luigi" game, which means Paper Mario's appearance in it is non-canon to Paper Mario. They use these naming patterns deliberately. The "Super" Paper Mario seems deliberate, since they wanted to indicate it was NOT the path Paper Mario was actually going in, and... Likewise, it's not the path Paper Mario went in, gameplay-wise.

Looking into it further, later games, such as Sticker Star and Color Splash, have deliberate references to events/characters from 64 and TTYD, such as referencing characters like Goombella, Peach's old Paper Mario design, etc. and so on, but none of them actually reference Super Paper Mario at all.

To clarify on my post, since I don't think I explained it very well, when it came to the "3D" stuff

In the Paper Mario games, it's 2D characters that can move in a 3D space. Besides moving left and right, they can move in and out, on a 3D plane, and this 3D level of movement is acknowledged throughout the entire game. In Super Paper Mario, 99% of characters can ONLY move left and right in 2D, and characters being able to move on a 3D plane is seen as out of the ordinary. Like, it's literally a story mechanic.

This indicates it's not in the same universe/"series" as the other Paper Mario games.
