LoK is lesbian, not yuri.

The existence of a counterexample doesn't change the point, it's more about the statistics in this scenario. Hence why you can go into the anime topic and find largely just written by men, for men stuffs: that's the demographic that makes up the lion's share of the genre.

Sure.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400-current-events/80768592

It's all stuff by men.

https://anichart.net/Spring-2024

All of the yuri is written by men (that I recognize by name, that is).

https://www.animefeminist.com/yuri-is-for-everyone-an-analysis-of-yuri-demographics-and-readership/

The larger demographic reading yuri manga is men (as of 2017).

So, statistically speaking, yuri is a genre made by men and is being consumed by men. If we are to assume that under capitalism the consumer is the target: yuri manga is by men, for men.

The most lopsided polling, as in the only poll with a male:female ratio that wasn't almost 1:1, was the Comic Yuri Hime polling. Which explicitly favored men by a notable margin:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/0/03b871c4.png

So yes, there are plenty of minor publishers who found a 51:49 split, or something similar, finding that their audience had an edge towards women, the one with the most popularity has a notable shift otherwise. This in spite of being the source of things like I'm in Love with the Villainess, The Summer you were there, etc.

Similarly, the act of having the largest demographic not be the one that you aren't in doesn't mean that you aren't allowed to consume. While I would agree that you can make the argument that it's "for everyone" as opposed to "for women/men", I feel that the distinction largely isn't relevant as the entire point of my premise is that the overwhelmingly large amount of yuri anime being produced is explicitly the things that fall into the "are popular with guys who buy figs" crowd far more than they are in the "are popular with any other crowd" line up.

Yes. One which was 52:46 and the other was 47:44, or two that are *extremely* to a 1:1.

Hence why I said that there are two ways to read this: either you go by who is buying the manga and it has a male bias, or you go by the polling and it has an even distribution with no real bias. Like, that's the point: the only significant bias ever shown has been male directed.

  1. I'm only talking about Japan.
  2. I'm not denying that there aren't ones that are. I'm just pointing out the difference between Revolutionary Girl Utena and Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night, and why the former has a completely different vibe and why there is a relevant distinction to be made.

utena is actually a very bad example to use

as the anime very much was handled by a man the manga creator originally did NOT want utena and anthy to be a couple

and lets try to stick with modern works as that was what i was talking about to start with

Fair. That said, I started with modern works back in post 28: https://anichart.net/Spring-2024

There is plenty of yuri currently being run, but unless I missed something it's all done by guys. Which was the entire point, really, as I only brought up manga because you can at least get gender statistics: this is a topic primarily focused on animated stuffs (in my eyes), the existence of manga is mostly just a tangential thing as you can usually get a reasonable 1:1 demographics between the two.

Correct. There is no list of just yuri that are currently running. Hence why I'm posting a list of anime currently running and saying that there are currently no yuri that are made by women running, despite there being several yuri running, as an example to show that yuri shows are very often, to the point of it being pretty overwhelming, made by guys.

So yes, it's something like 5 done by guys, one done by a gal, and one I'm not certain of (the direction roles are almost all guys, but I'm not sure of the author). You are correct, it's not exclusively guys making literally all of them.

Kill La Kill comes to mind. If you're willing to look outside anime, and any cartoon works, Owl House is superb. If you want something absolutely trashy that exists entirely for the male gaze but many lesbians enjoy anyway the I would recommend Valkyrie Drive Mermaid.

If I could broaden my scope to implied Yuri we would have more hits too. Pity about Witch From Mercury, it is really done very well.
