I played it for the first time late last year. Is save scumming meant to be part of the game? Getting damaged can be so detrimental!

Any opinions on the series for someone who's never played one?

I played one of those games and would get pissed at the RNG. Several times during a 99% chance to make a shot, I'd get that 1%. Seemed like once you started getting into a groove the game would throw in harder enemies at you. You end up being way under powered.

Yes; there's a dedicated mode that prevents it called ironman, so if you're not playing that, you're expected to be saving and loading a lot. Which, gotta say, a lot less time consuming on the Series X!

If you've got the expansion, I would recommend building the Resistance Ring first so you can start running covert ops. Barring that, the GTS should be a priority.

It's a single player game, so you're free to save scum to your heart's content. I would caution against using it as a crutch, though, as knowing bad decisions will lead to permanent consequences forces you to consider your moves carefully before executing them, making you a better player in the long run.

I can only speak to XCOM 2 and its expansion, and the spinoff Chimera, but the former is among my favorite games. There's a steep learning curve (and a steep difficulty curves as well), but it's a fantastic game.

It's popular enough to have a furry mod, so it's probably good.

You get to customize, RP, and fall in love with your army dudes before they're mulched. Decent sense of progression on the campaign with base building, a tech tree, leveling up skill trees on soldiers and managing their gear. The difficulty curve is odd, and it definitely pulls the percentages out of its ass, but it's fun.

Sharpshooters are goat. I'd screw up constantly with the rest of my team, but thanks to my Sharpshooters being properly positioned, my grunts rarely had issues. It's the only thing I learned how to do well in the game and it carried me.

Good luck. I started a new L/I run not long ago with beta strike and grim horizon enabled. Shit's kicking my ass. Earlier, I had a crucial facility mission go south because one advent ran full tilt towards my concealed reaper who was standing between a lot of bad. She was turned into swiss cheese and now I have one day left on the doom clock to reduce some progress.

XCOM2 gets a lot of praise, but not enough imo. Like, it should be up there with the greats.

I love the difficulty curve of the xcom games, but everything about the progression and resource management in 2 feels bad to me. Long war 2 is kinda novel at least, but I still vastly prefer lw 1.

Somewhere in the middle to later stages of the campaign when new enemies stop being introduced, the game shifts heavily into XCOM's favor. In both Firaxis games, high ranked soldiers are basically minigods in their own right. They can still die if you're not careful, but the abilities and equipment you have access to allow you to blow through missions without too much trouble.

gl, hf

I loved the game and watched some good strategy videos by a guy called... TotalBiscuit or something? He made it look so easy. I tried to emulate that... and failed miserably.

XCom 1 LW is up there as one of my favourite games ever. It's just so replayable.
