My mind is blown by how unpopular stealth games are. Or how many people when given the option, prefer guns blazing. To me that is more stressful and taxing than finding a way to sneak around enemies and taking them out while they're unaware of your presence.

Patience is the problem, people want the gratification right now and busting in like John Wick gives that to them, learning how the enemies work/path and taking them down one by one or sneaking past doesn't.

The data in this study is based on a percentile

Gamers aren't becoming less interested, there are simply more people considered "gamers", and the new additions happen to not be interested.

release final fantasy tactics on modern systems then COWARDS
Think is there are a wide range of strategy types. You have your tile based RPGs like FFT, Tactics Ogre and Disagea. You have games like Stellaris. You also have hybrid RPGs like BG and The Shadowrun Trilogy. There's games like Rot3k, Total war, AoE

It's a wide varying genre. I wonder what games are they talking about. Almost all the ones I mentioned are popular games over many different genres that have strategic elements to them

I would imagine it's more because the gaming and gamer bubbles have grown to include more casual players and games. And I'm not using casual in a negative sense, I mean more like accessibility.
This is my thought. I wouldn't be shocked if there are actually more thinking game enjoyers than ever, but that the video game audience as a whole has increased making them a smaller percentage of it.

I will freely admit that my brain and hands are not good enough for RTS games at this point.
RTS is less about strategy than other strategy oriented games really. It's mostly about how fast your micro / apm is. Turn based games are balanced around the fact that you can take as much time as you want to figure out what to do

Getting around to fully reading the article, yeah.

People gotta keep in mind your average "gamer" these days is probably spending several hours on something Candy Crush adjacent than a game of Civ.
