He was capable of walking around during the day without use of his powers, and sunlight didn't kill him. But, if he laid down to rest during daytime in his coffin he was in a stupor and not able to act. So no definitive answer is possible. While there are many versions of the vampire legend, they generally do involve the person dying and becoming an undead.
