I guess I've technically been to a Cedar Fair Park since they bought Knott's Berry Farm. Never been to Cedar Point or anything though.

And I love Six Flags Magic Mountain. It looks like we'll likely be going there for Halloween this year. Nothing really planned for the summer though

Their Viper Roller Coaster is the best I have ever done.

Don't think we bought a fast track pass.

Definitely on my to visit list.

I've done disney fast pass, and in summer we still had to wait 15 minutes. But by comparison the normal line was... hoo boy. Hour and a half wasted just standing around.

People today are lucky that smartphones exist so that time actually flies by compared to back then where if you didn't have a gameboy you had to just stare around at the signs and sets soaking up the scene to pass the time.

We go to Disney almost yearly but dont go to Six Flags even though one is like an hour from us. After tickets, parking, and then food and waters, Six Flags is way fucking expensive.

Say what you want about Disney but if you can carry it, you can bring pretty much all the water, sodas, and food into the parks.

I'm glad you had a pleasant experience with Viper. That coaster has been my "avoid at all costs" ride for years now because of how rough it is. Myself and many others have gotten headaches from how much it slams your head into the over the shoulder restraints.

No, Viper is an old looping coaster made by the now defunct Arrow Dynamics

While I've been to STL 6 Flags once, the only other park I ever go to is the one here in KC called Worlds (and Oceans) Of Fun, which recently was bought by 6 Flags owners.

A little history, WOF/OOF is over 50 years old. Originally both parks were two separate entities. They had their own entrances, which were on completely opposite ends of the compound. Then overtime, you had a same day gate in the middle, with the connecting ride was The Monsoon (may it RIP), to where you would have to pay an additional fee to go into the other park. Then more recently, I'd say in the last 10 years or so, they stopped the same day gate, and when you pay to get into one park, you're going to both, which Iis why it's a tad pricey.

The place is not bad. Beautiful at night with everything lit up. It's worth checking out for sure. And if you're lucky, you'll see a fight break out, because that happens quite a bit.

Also, another interesting this, in The Last Of Us, I wanna say Episode 4 when they were going down an interstate (I'm guessing I-435), you see a large roller coaster. That's the Mamba, tallest coaster at the park, at 200 feet for it's highest point. Gotta say, post apocalyptic WOF looks scary lol.

I've been to a few Six Flags, mainly the St. Louis one because I have family that live there.

I also make at least one trip a year to my local Cedar Fair park, Worlds of Fun, Cedar Fair's forgotten child. It's fun enough but there isn't enough to do to warrant going more than once a year.

Might go again this year.

Yeah, I hear that. I really don't go anymore to it or Oceans. Last time I went to WOF was 2016, and prior to that was, early 2000s at best. But I used to go a lot prior to that. It's definitely changed. I'm just sadden they took out the Monsoon. They said it was old (only 30 years) but Viking Voyager has been around a lot longer and it's still around. Also is Fury Of The Nile still a ride out there? I haven't heard much about it in recent years and it wasn't open when I went last.

Fastlane passes are pretty awesome at Cedar Fair parks. You can use them as many times as you want and it let's you skip the line immediately instead of just scheduling a time to ride.

I have been to 4 of the parks.

Six Flags Magic Mountain I went to around 4 or 5 times, last in 2007. Selection of rides is really great and is probably the best for me. I know things have changed in the last 17 years. I do hope to take my wife and kid at some point here when my kid is older. Since I am out of state, it would probably be on a family visit.

Knotts Berry Farm I have been to 3 times, last in 2003. I remember a few rides being pretty good like Ghost Rider. Will have to visit in the future for the same reasons above.

Cedar Point I have been to 3 times, last in 2014. A good selection of rides, but I would like to see them bring back an indoor ride or two. Will revisit again when my kid is older, not too far of a drive.

Kings Island I have been to 4 times, last in 2021. A really balanced selection of rides for everyone, Flight of Fear is a great indoor ride. Closest park to me.

Magic Mountain still holds the record for most coasters in 1 Park IIRC. So yeah, they still have a killer selection of rides.

Oh if your last visit was in 2003, then it's changed considerably since then. The Knott family sold the park to Cedar Fair in 1997 and they've been pretty good about building up the park. Since 2003, they've added 5 new coasters (bringing their total up to 9), half a dozen new flat rides and completely redesigned the Fiesta Village and Boardwalk sections of the park.

Buying the passes just encourages the parks to keep doing them and make them worse than they already are. The approach Disney at least used to have where you would reserve a spot on a ride at a specific time and could only do it a few times a day and got it along with your standard ticket was the best.

I'll weigh in on this as well, and maybe Nox will agree. If you're looking to go to a park to just strictly ride roller coasters and tap into the pure adrenaline boost of riding rides, then definitely go to Magic Mountain.

If you're looking for a nice, peaceful, relaxing day in a decently well themed park, that also happens to have a great selection of rides (although none quite as good as the best ones at SFMM) then go to Knotts.

Knotts is more immersive and feels more like a Roller Coaster Tycoon park designed by someone who puts a lot of time and thought into how a park operates, while Magic Mountain is a Roller Coaster Tycoon park designed by an adrenaline junkie who really really loves thrilling roller coasters

As for the topic at hand, I've been to a good chunk of the Six Flags and Cedar Fair parks across the country.

Most of our trips are smashed in the middle of a vacation with lots of traveling, and if we want to get on every ride a couple of times and really get a feel for each one, so we end up getting fast passes to the parks that we think are going to be the busiest. Cedar Point, Magic Mountain, Great Adventure in New Jersey, etc.

But we also schedule our days in the middle of the week so they're less busy. If you're not going to one of the major major parks and can plan to go on a Tuesday-Thursday, then you can definitely get by without fast passes.

Since it's our one hobby we're really passionate about, if we think it's gonna be busy we'll end up getting the passes since we're only gonna go to some of these parks 1 or 2 times in our lives. It really does change the entire experience of a park.

Last Halloween, I went to Knotts Scary farm. We have the fast pass. We were able to ride all coasters and visited all mazes. It was def worth it imo.

2 years before that, we went without the fast past. We were still able to go to all mazes, but only 1 coaster (Silver Bullet). Still fun, wished I rode all costers in that time.

Overall, imo fast past is worth it. But we use it for mostly packed days. For average days like summer, no idea... maybe?

I don't really know tbh what the consensus is. I was always under the impression that Screamin' Eagle and The Boss were what are considered the "classics." Rode Screamin' Eagle and never felt closer to death than being on a wooden rollercoaster that was rickety and felt like the ride was off the tracks at times, but whatever, I'm still around!

From what I hear, St. Louis Six Flags, with rides like the Screamin' Eagle is considered bad because of how beat up you get on them rides. Again, had no frame of reference, so I figured that's just what rides are like. I've been to Disney World and Silver Dollar City along with a few smaller one-off parks here and there, so I have a better reference point now. The only real issue I have with Six Flags is that it isn't really strong with theming which tbh, I kinda appreciate more than rides.
