WARNING: you might want to put on some sunglasses before looking at the below images. your retinas may be PERMANENTLY seared by the vivid colors if you are used to only watching recently made movies, which almost universally look like horse shit. that is if these even embed idk. not going to bother doing that. maybe squint before clicking the links tho.

I feel like I've seen this topic before.

Back when color films were new they exaggerated them for the wow effect. We call that oversaturated now.

there were silent movies shot in color like 30-40 years before anything in the OP had been made

I feel like TC may have just watched Barbie (or perhaps a making-of featurette).

But I agree that the use of color was often more thoughtfully and effectively done in the past.

Technically true but also... not. Especially not the word, 'shot'.

Some films we released in limited colour achieved via various means, almost all of them post-production, often filters for just one or two colours. Some films had hand painted colour applied directly to the cells, but that was a very limited practice, not for wide release.

So while Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind were not the first colour films, they were the first colour films the majority of people got to see.

Edit: Also, yeah that early stuff was super oversaturated. I'd fire a colour key tech that did that today.

nope. several silent movies shot on color film, albeit not generally for the entire runtime. and not the same as tinting in post, which was seen in many silent movies.

furthermore color movies had been made in two trip technicolor throughout the 30s before three strip really took off with a star is born in 1937, two years before wizard of oz and gone with the wind.

desaturation and brown/bloom has their uses.

However I do miss dramatic lighting and how colors can be used to tell stories. I am generally tired of media looking washed out.

Ah. Tagged as 'saturated'.

Some newer films do this when it's appropriate. But who wants to watch a realistic drama with super unnatural colors? Besides TC..

did you know everything being brown/dark is just as unnatural and actually less visually appealing?

and that many dramas and whatnot were colorful? like vertigo or all that heaven allows or etc?

I don't think we're going back to oversaturated as the norm, so adjust your TV settings? Put it on vivid and jack the color up.

Enys Men was a recent film told through color that I really enjoyed.
Birds of Prey was an incredibly colorful film (and also the best DCEU film imo).

There's a line between denuded and oversaturation. I want to be clear, both have their place in storytelling.

Yet, even real life is colorful. Here are just some amateur photos from around where I grew up. I took these and none of them are doctored. Drama happens in real color. There is real color sometimes in reality.

Uh uh uh. Apparently color is bad. Cover your hometown with a layer of brown sand. And fill the sky with smog. Then be all grim dank all over the place. Oh, and skulls everywhere. That is what the cool producers do these days right? Or was that the 90s?

Sarcasm aside though, this seems to be a bigger problem with games than movies.

Because a great deal of them use the same basic game engine presets out of the box.

But make a game slightly colorful like Diablo 3 and suddenly everyone makes such a huge fuss that, well... in that case Blizzard was still cool back then so they responded by adding a secret rainbow pony level that took the colors to 11 to make a point.

Once you know how it was shot, it just looks like a daytime scene with a blue gel over the lens
