You can have both of these things. It's all about good city planning. I didn't even consider how lush and beautiful things would be here in Seoul. I had spent some time in Tokyo and assumed it'd be similar, just a concrete jungle. However I don't have to go very far to escape the city noise. It's but a 10 minute walk away to some lovely sections undisturbed my man.

Thats why I enjoy those walking tour of Tokyo in 4k videos that pop up on YouTube sometimes. Homeboy is on a bustling city street, turns two corners, and is now in a serene garden.

Ive never oppressed anyone or did anything illegal. My only complaint in 7 years is being called in for speeding on my way to a robbery call at a Walgreens.

I signed up because, well, why wouldnt you? The point is to enjoy this small and short life we have. Why would I not do it? You make six figures, unlimited overtime. Once I get called up for detective Ina couple months Ill have a take home ride. I can retire at like 44 or 50 for max and start cashing out at 50. Work 4 days week. Get a shit ton of time off.

and maybe cops do nothing in some boring Midwest town. We stay busy here. Call after call. Call volume is high.

rewarding and fun job.

i live in nyc.

my commute is like 20 mins on train including walking to the station and to work. my job covers an annual metro pass. in a car its 30 mins and also costs $30. alternatively i could own a car (lol) and pay absurd amounts for parking and gas and insurance.

i also have various department stores, shops, malls, restaurants, groceries, movie theaters, parks, etc within 5-20 mins of walking. and like 6 train lines within 10-15 mins instead of just the one i take to work so i can get around to diff areas of the city p quick.

this is why nyc is the goat american city.

Rural areas skew perceptions. In smaller towns, the crime rate may be low enough that people rarely encounter police. But that's only at the local level.

Have some sympathy for those living in places with heaps of angry cops.

I grew up in a town of 10,000 people

most kids either stayed on their own street or got driven places by their parents

99% of the roads had no sidewalk. riding a bike in certain parts was a gamble because half the time you were going around curves blocked entirely by trees. I still rode my bike all the time but only ever 1-2 miles from home.

You think millions of people zooming around on motorbikes with no enforced safety rules or structure, with pedestrians having to play frogger to cross the street, is better than the US?

I'll add I'm only referring to South East Asia with this comment as I haven't been to China or Japan. But Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam etc have a ridiculously unsafe system in place

I live in a small town of 6,000 people. Almost every store, restaurant, and gas station is within four blocks from my house; probably 95% of them. It's nice. Honestly, I still usually drive, but it's nice that they're so close and I can easily walk if I want to.

Not really, get a collapsible wagon and it's easy.

I'm sure you have this idea where you're carrying a bunch of bags of groceries in your hands and all I can say to that is the only reason you picture it that way is because you just aren't actually putting real thought into it because you're already sold on cars being the answer.

The entirety of America is founded on and continues to be based on oppression. Everything , literally everything here is designed to take money from you. Everything relies on exploitation of working class people. Unless you live as a person in the woods.

At the end of the day, we are insignificant people. None of us will change the world or be remembered. And everyone is around 30. Were almost at that age where you can just die from anything, my goal in life is to enjoy it, with my wife and baby. If you told me, Ill pay you 10k more to do this job. Id quit this job in a heartbeat.

Regardless. Im proud of the work I done. I work endlessly and I do my best for the community. There is nobody I know in my station or I work with. That had anywhere close to the amount of calls I take. Proactive arrests. Im out there grinding every day without fail. It drives my coworkers nuts when theyre not feeling it.

You can talk bad about my job, it doesnt hurt me. Theres one type of opinion that matters. Thats people like earlier this year. When me and one of my closest friends booted a door to see a dad shot his wife and kids all dead. And we stood there with no fucking gloves giving chest compressions to the only kid that had a pulse. Then having to go back in there with the fire department and manually check every kid and adults wounds to make sure theyre dead. Check for pulses. Staring at little kids blank stare eyes with gunshot wounds to the back of their heads. I had blood and matter up to my elbow.

But we managed to keep one kid alive. And thats worth the rest of my career if you ask me

Part of the problem, is there was a technological arms race. Today's cops have access to more imposing weapons, mobility, armor, and surveillance than ever.

And do you know WHY it's a problem in the USA? It's because most cities there are not designed to be walkable cities.

If people go "We should make cities walkable" and your response is "This is America and the cities aren't walkable so we need cars". Congrats, you said nothing worth saying at all. Is that all you've been doing this whole thread? Because if so no shit people keep bringing up using a cart in a walkable city, you're not actually making any kind of coherent point.

People aren't saying to take the existing infrastructure and just walk around it.
