Denmark has recalled several spicy ramen noodle products by South Korean company Samyang, claiming that the capsaicin levels in them could poison consumers.

Three fiery flavours of the Samyang instant ramen line are being withdrawn: Buldak 3x Spicy & Hot Chicken, 2x Spicy & Hot Chicken and Hot Chicken Stew.

Denmark's food agency issued the recall and warning on Tuesday, urging consumers to abandon the product.

But the maker Samyang says there's no problem with the quality of the food.

"We understand that the Danish food authority recalled the products, not because of a problem in their quality but because they were too spicy," the firm said in a statement to the BBC.

"The products are being exported globally. But this is the first time they have been recalled for the above reason."

It's unknown if any specific incidents in Denmark had prompted authorities there to take action.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said it had assessed the levels of capsaicin in a single packet to be "so high that they pose a risk of the consumer developing acute poisoning".

"If you have the products, you should discard them or return them to the store where they were purchased," it said in a statement.

It also emphasised the warning for children, for whom extremely spicy food can cause harm.

The notice has sparked heated discussion online with many amused reactions from lovers of spicy food. Many have made assertions about the Danes' low tolerance for spice.

"I had a friend from Denmark who thought tasteless breaded shrimp with a little bit of ground pepper on it was too spicy. Not surprised they think this ramen is poison," read one top-liked comment on a Reddit ramen forum.

Samyang said it planned to "closely look into the local regulations" in Denmark and respond after that.

The noodles don't appear to have been recalled before in any other country, nor have there been other safety warnings issued.

Capsaicin is the chemical compound in chilli peppers which creates the burning feeling.

When humans eat peppers, the capsaicin is released into saliva and binds on to receptors in the mouth.

Samyang is a major South Korean food manufacturer which brands itself as the first company in the country to create instant noodles, back in the 1960s.

I mean, they're not wrong.

Buldak 2x is unreasonably spicy. There's a point where flavor simply disappears like with Da Bomb. Buldak has achieved that.

I've not found 3x near me but I eat wings that are over a million scovilles so I doubt it would be an issue.

The problem comes when somebody who isn't acclamated to high capsaicin levels eats something like that.

People (mostly young guys trying to show off) need to know their limits.

You would think but some people can.
The only people that are faking their pain tolerance will let you know it hurts while coming out the other end.
I dated a tiny lady who could handle spice like no other. Like, she should have been on some spicy eating contest or show. Never once had she considered it burning on the way out until i asked.

I digress, lots of people laughing at them. What is the effects of this poisoning they speak of? They make it sound like someone died

It's not so much pain tolerance but just spice tolerance.

Your mouth builds tolerance faster than your bowels do. I have an extremely high tolerance but if I eat extremely spicy foods I do get some cramping still.

Yeah, theyre good. I prefer their carbonara flavor, little more mellow on the spice level and I like the noodle shape more.

never had the 2 or 3x though. The regular fire noodles are about as spicy as I want to go.

It is to people who can't handle spice. People who cannot handle spice at all who eat something like that can have a pretty bad reaction to it. A wing place near where I used to live took their hottest wing off the menu because they got tired of having to deal with young guys trying to show off to their friends get in over their head.

Sucks because the only ones that punishes are people like me who can handle it fine :(

This reminds me of when I order Chinese food. Over and over I tell them to make it spicy and it is barely any spice on it, in my neighborhood. Then I went to a Chinese place in a more lower income area and when I asked for spicy. They were right on the money. I would say that the Danes just have too much money to enjoy spice, but South Korea's GPD is higher.

No I know. Not everyone's the same. It's not spicy for me because I grew up eating stuff like this. I'm a 1/4 Korean and my grandma who's half black/half Korean made us a lot of Korean food that was spicy asf. Still it ain't for everyone. It sucks cuz some of these flavors are REALLY good.

2x spicy didn't affect me at all last time I had it. I actually made it the way the package says, and left a half cup of water after draining which probably diluted it.

I'll try another pack and fully drain the water, then add the sauce. That stuff used to be right at the edge of my tolerance so I'm curious as to just how absurd my spice tolerance has gotten.

I have a package of the mild pink package carbonara stuff at home and I have to overload that shit with cheese and drink milk to stomach it. Even then, I always have a ROUGH day on the toilet the day after. I cant imagine what the higher levels must be like.

I dont even consider myself a lightweight when it comes to spicy stuff but that brand in particular is rough. Pretty good tasting though.

I recently tried out Annie Chun's and became an instant fan (get it? instant). Vacuum packed 'fresh' noodles, great variation of flavors, and it's vegan and non-GMO for those who care about that

And it's really even more instant than a noodle cup - you just add 1/4 cup of water to steam the noodles and then mix it up with the sauce

Honestly? Good on them. Buldak is just spicy for the sake of being spicy. There's no flavour other than burning. Shin Ramyun Red is about as hot as I'll go as its spicy but really tasty. I've actually made Chili Oil yesterday which I added to ramen today, absolutely delicious, and not too hot even though I added Habanero chili spice to it.
