I don't think the game is very fun.

Had to play it in the 2001-2004 window to truly appreciate its glory.

On the other hand, it's a quick playthrough if you're not trying to 100% it. It does help knowing some of the tricks ahead of time, too... I remember figuring out some shit as a kid and it is all burned into my memory at this point.

Ok? Not being able to adapt to a game means you're just missing out. Effects no one but you.

But it is true that you had to enjoy it before San Andreas came out to remember it more fondly. San Andreas overshadowed all of the 3D era GTAs.

You should try Liberty City Stories some time. Its basically the better version of GTA3 with SA's gameplay improvements.

It was amazing for its time, but the very next GTA made it feel dated already.

Map is a pain if I remember correctly.

City is well designed though if you know the shortcuts.

It was amazing back in its time but its not that great anymore since every GTA that came after has far surpassed it. I would play for nostalgia sake but thats it.

Vice City and SA were always the more fun ones to play.

If I played GTA3 today it would be just to park somewhere nostalgic and listen to the radio.

GTA3 is rough around the edges, to put it mildly, but I still love it even if the other GTAs are better. It had a great tone and atmosphere that was very dark and dreary and with all the gangs that could and would turn on you throughout the story, it really did feel like you were playing in "The most dangerous city in America".

The soundtrack is pretty underrated too. I even have a few songs from it on my phone. It introduced me to so much different kinds of music as a kid and I'll forever appreciate it for that.

Sure, nostalgia carries a lot of it when playing it in modern day, but I don't think it's totally unplayable or unenjoyable.

It really does hit different, as they say. The apprehensive, melancholic "end of history" feel of the late 90's, pre-9/11 world

Rise FM is perfect for driving at night. Alas, the station loop is longer than the night. Hence, one of the things I then did in the PC version was to adjust the game's day-night cycle to be realistic! I cannot stress how much that small changes the game's feel.
Anyhow, I would sometimes hop on to YT and put this version of Rise FM on instead of the in-game version.

even at the time the game was released, i wasn't feeling it that much.

it wasn't till Vice City dropped that i became fully fascinated with GTA...

The atmosphere is something that no subsequent GTAs have matched. Even compared to IV's far drearier plot, I think III is the most serious of the series in terms of tone.

I remember not really getting the implication when you're sent to pick Misty up from the clinic.

Luckily, my mom was in the room while I was playing it and for some reason it struck her as fucking hilarious. I remember her laughing her ass off and just repeatedly saying, "Misty got the clap!"

Dont remember lll much but I replayed Vice city and thought it was a blast.

I actually love the radio chatter, it makes it feel like there really is an underground techno club in Liberty City, and a GameFM house party etc.

Rise FM is so awesome. The Liberty City Stories version is great too.

aggro gangs get pretty annoying

3 is the only GTA I've 100%'ed, or even completed. I just couldn't get into any of the games after it, they didn't hold my attention. Meanwhile I replayed 3 during the early days of the pandemic and it felt like coming home.

Also, Chatterbox is still the best talk radio in the series, hands down.

Oh also obligatory make yourself a human wax museum on the third island. There's a lake that you can spook pedestrians into with a car. They drown and the money gives off this cool eery green glow. It looks so cool.

There's also a path hugging the coastline in the very north the Staunton island. In one particular spot, by persistently standing in the way of a pedestrian and forcing them to walk around you, they can be tricked into stepping onto the unscaleable slope to the water.
The inevitable result triggers nearby pedestrians into a rush to gawk at the body, with predictable consequences.

Something random I always do when I am forced to stop at the elevating bridge is that, when there are other cars stopped, I will shoot at them in a drive by and watch them immediately drive off into the water.

The pedestrians on the Chinatown El station have a tendency to walk off the platform and onto the tracks, where they inevitably are run over by the train.
Cue the other pedestrians running to gawk at the body, inexplicably dying with a crunch when they run into the stationary train.
It's almost as amusing as pushing pedestrians into Windmill Street station's stairs of death in GTA4.

It's kind of a mess to navigate thanks to the inlet that divides the place in two, with only two (three if you count the tunnel) crossing points.
Shoreside Vale also feels like it doesn't know what it is supposed to be.
Portland's primarily industrial parks and low-income apartments, Staunton is the bustling commercial district with impressive skyscrapers, and Shoreside Vale is, uh... a comparatively huge airport, an industrial area, a dam, then a couple high-end houses on a ridge overlooking three ghetto apartment blocks.
