Get stomped. Getting stomped means Im learning and will progress fast. Dying at the last second means I know how to beat the boss and either I screwed up at the last second or got unlucky. Both of those outcomes suck WAY worse than getting stomped IMO

The duality of dark souls bosses. You either get stomped immediately or you take the boss to their last sliver of health before it goes tits up.

Logically, the second is better. You get more exposure to the end-game of the boss' mechanics. But emotionally it's so much worse.

Bonus point: the pain of nearly beating the boss on the first or second try, only to them get your ass stomped in less than 5 seconds on every subsequent attempt.

That indicates that I clearly have a working theory of how to beat it, I just need to polish my execution, and not by much.

Getting whooped means I have no clue.

The first one. In the past couple days I experience the second from the Fire Giant and Malenia and I don't much care for it at all. First time fighting Malenia too and I did so well. I'd rather rinse & repeat sooner than die to some bullshit much later.

It depends. But in general I would say 1/3.

If I'm playing a game, at some point I should face a boss I can't beat automatically, otherwise the game is too easy. If I get beat at the 1/3 mark that means I've come across an actual challenge, and need to either gain skills and/or study its attack patterns to beat it.

If I get beat at the 1-hit point level, that's usually a sign of the boss getting a lucky hit.

at the 1/3 mark I feel 'yep this is a real boss battle I need to git gud'

at the 1-hit left mark I feel 'come on brah you know I won, do I really have to do the whole thing all over again,'

Skill check bosses as late as possible, to learn the mechanics. Gear check bosses as quickly as possible to not waste time I can be using to get better gear.

1/3 since it doesnt feel as shitty.

Ive had the 2nd scenario happen in Souls games a bunch of times, and its always a shitty feeling. Especially when it throws you off on other runs where you fail to repeat that performance which just makes the frustration grow even more.

Stomped. I can lick my wounds, learn, and come back again.

The times I've gotten a boss to one hit and then lost just seem that much more painful. If I'm going to lose, I'd rather get it out of the way quickly.

No, nothing gives me anger more than getting killed at the last hit and then it just makes me anxious and become too impatient for after. I end up making way too many mistakes and makes me get back to that point too late in time.

its context. Getting stomped means that I'm still not used to it while getting to the end probably meant that I had learned the fight but I guess if it meant that the fight wasn't too hard and I lost at the end then I'll get it next time but if I'm going against a really annoying boss and I might have gotten through by luck then dying at the end would really destroy me. The higher you are, the harder the fall.

Maybe if your boss is some kind of puzzle instead of an actual boss fight, or it's otherwise easy when you know how.

Dying on the last hit means you're almost good enough to win.

Getting stomped means you still have a LONG way to go, and you haven't even seen the boss's final form

Depends on a lot of factors. Like with the area 5 boss in Blaster Master, my hand would always get cramped up while fighting it, so if I'm going to lose I'd rather it happen sooner rather than later, so my hand isn't in as bad shape for the next attempt.
