The MAGA doofuses might like it but many GOP leaders privately didn't want it overturned due to the political ramifications. Overturning Roe was absolutely moronic from an electoral perspective and turned a ton of cakewalk races into real challenges for the GOP while costing them seats and kneecapping their ability to use the House to mess with Biden.

It's appealing to fringe evangelicals vs. actually winning elections.

Yes and no? I've heard dozens of people use "dog that caught the car."

They needed abortion to win elections, and having it always as a promise was always going to mobilize the single issues people.

Ban finally landed, and now they're losing in droves because the decision brought out the sane people, and the nutters kinda stayed home because they already god what they wanted.

The GOP is losing elections because it wasn't what they ever wanted. This cost them too much, and hopefully it continues to cost them until they're no longer a viable party.

That's why they've moved on to invalidating elections. They realize they no longer need to pretend as though they care for democracy or winning elections. They finally got the Christo-fascist SCJ majority they wanted.

The GOP could have spent further decades giving their voters more empty promises about repealing Roe and "protecting family values" or whatever, and the voters would never have batted an eye at the lack of real action.

But actually repealing it means two things: it means that their message vis--vis abortion has now changed from "We're going to stop it" to "We're going to keep it stopped," which is more difficult to mobilize voters around, and it means that they've given Democrats, and Democratic women in particular, one of the single greatest motivators to get out and vote that they could have.

You're missing the point. Republicans (unlike centrists) understand that winning elections is a means,. not an end. Their goal, or one of their goals, was to increase men's power over women's health and sexuality by overturning Roe. They succeeded. This wasn't a blunder for them, it was a victory, and one that their enemies almost certainly won't be able to reverse for many years, because you can't vote out Supreme Court judges.
