I had an encounter at the Hospital with an old black man Ive known for years working here. (Yes, being black is relevant) He has to be at least in his mid 70s. Genuinely a very kind person based on my interactions over the years. I live in Georgia so religion is heavily engraved here like the rest of the south.

We usually only really talk about sports but today he brought up politics. He first brought up Trump receiving $20 million from Putin or something. I havent heard about this and havent looked it up yet. It wouldnt surprise me in the slightest. He clearly doesnt like Trump. What he said next really shocked me.

Women shouldnt be at the head of anything. Especially President. Even if they are black.

I didnt say anything because Im literally in the hallway of a hospital and I had work to do. I didnt have time to get into an argument but my facial expression said it all. He then started to talk about how the Bible said women should only support men and shouldnt be the heads of anything. This is a man with a wife, kids (including a daughter), nieces, granddaughters, etc. Even more shocking because he heavily supports black people. Many of us do, outside of black businesses for some reason but that is another topic, yet he was against Harris because of the Bible. After he kept looking at my face he quickly changed the subject but I was truly shocked that was his opinion.

I looked this up afterwards and saw it was a passage from Timothy. Looking deeper into Timothy itself people are arguing if Timothy even wrote this passage. (Apparently these are letters from Timothy or something) There are actual debates by historians on if this is forged or not.

So you made this opinion based on a verse from the Bible that might be forged from a person who was apparently taught under another person who heard about what Jesus and God desires second hand? It is so damn easy to forge shit back then or make up shit. Being able to control people with this was super easy and probably guaranteed to happen. Its scary how someone would go against everything based on one verse from the Bible. He pretty much told me he isnt voting for anyone simply because Harris is a woman.

This is one of those situations where you simply ask a question like: "So it was ok when she was Vice President?"
He will realize he didn't actually care when she was and now there is a mental inconsistency exposed.

He has a terrible take but you have one, too. He just has an awful opinion but he trusted you with it. You dont need religion to have bad opinions but it is a free country. He isnt being controlled or anything thats just what he thinks. You could have just politely disagreed and pointed out thats an awful reason (but in private).

I should have done that. I was just trying to leave and not cause a scene. Who knows what would have happened if the wrong person walked by during this discussion.

yea no need to argue with the man, it is just interesting that the President is a sacred Male job but I bet he don't see any other positions in government the same way

It sounds like he likes you and trusts you. Old timers actually generally DO NOT discuss stuff like that in public. So just be kind but he was looking for push back and your esteemed opinion.

Religion in general controls people to propagate itself. It's very much not exclusive to the Bible.

Looking for pushback? Interesting. I didnt think about it like that. I guess I did give non verbal pushback but it obviously wasnt optimal. I did try to people polite as possible even after the fact. just keep in mind when it comes to beliefs like this you cannot change someone's mind, they have to change it themselves

that is why I suggest the simple question, it is not saying "you are wrong!" it is more like "huh, then what about this?" and often they would have never really thought about it

of course they could also go "women shouldn't hold any office at all!" or something like that, from the comment that wouldn't be a surprise either
sometimes when people are forced to think about something they take for granted the do react with disdain

Basically everything is so crazy in the world right now everyone is searching for answers and something to hold on to. The answer in dark times is each other. Its not so much having the right answer just someone reasoning through this thing called life is all people are looking for. Its the personal human bonds like this we make in life that matter because most other things really dont.

It's anonymous, who cares if he talks about it online? It's worth talking about terrible opinions, especially the kind that aren't generally spoken out loud, so people know what kinds of opinions are actually out there affecting votes.

Something that answers intangible questions, how could you deny that? The only power found in logic is that it satiates curiosity for a couple of days until that desire propagates again. If you can continue the answer the question of why are humans curious, you will always keep the need for something like religion alive.

Logic, in whatever format, is the root of something like religious text.
