Ive reconnected with a few folks via the discord and its been overall a positive experience. Im currently laid up post-surgery, so I thought it might be fun to post an AMA thread and see what happens. Maybe nothing! How's everything been going, Grace? Its mostly pretty good these days, thanks for asking! I go by Grae now, which is a long story (that Im not adverse to telling, but that wasnt the question). Im 36 now, which is something. I live in Maine with my partner and our two weird little dogs. Ive been working as a software engineer for almost 12 years now, currently Im employed by a large tech company that most folks would have heard of but wouldnt necessarily guess from that description. (Its an interactive AMA!) Ive had a pretty unique adult life so far. I was fortunate enough to find remote employment way before COVID, and I used that as an excuse to travel and live in various other countries. I did a count once and I think Ive been to roughly 65 countries (only counting places Ive stayed over in, not counting layovers and passing through). I lived in Thailand and Vietnam for 2 years each, and I co-founded a craft beer brewery in Vietnam. Thats actually what led to me meeting my partner/wife, we matched at a speed dating event in Hanoi, Vietnam and moved back to the US together during COVID. Anyway, Im a lot more stable, happy, and comfortable in my own skin than I was for at least part of my board 8 tenure. I got to a decent conversational level, not nearly fluent but enough to impress random strangers. I had a blast, made a lot of friends, drank a LOT of Chang beer. I also spent varying amounts of time in Pai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Bangkok. Thai food is still my favorite food, and if the long-term visas were easier Id absolutely think about living there again. They're some of the loveliest people I've ever met. And Tokyo is a magical place for food and people watching, I love taking trains and exploring and you can do that for days on end in Tokyo. My wife and I are hoping to take a trip to Japan next year, and I'm looking forward to exploring more of the country. I also had really positive experiences in South Korea and Taiwan, both of which I'd visit again in a heartbeat. We've floated the possibility of moving to Taiwan at some point depending on other circumstances. I liked Hong Kong for the food and the city is great to visit but I wouldn't live there. I had magical experiences in Myanmar, but I was fortunate to visit twice during a stable political climate and I'm not sure what that's like now. Laos was awesome, some of the best food I've ever had, and if you speak some Thai you can mostly get by on it (the writing system is almost the same, too). Outside of Asia, I am in love with Croatia, had a few good visits there. Moving to Europe is also a potential possible future, we're very undecided right now but know we want to move back out of the US at some point. But for traveling, Croatia is just such a beautiful country and has such great food. I went to Split once in the summer and it was like being in a fantasy novel. Cupcake2006 posted...
