I usually wait until they're at least older than a year, but preferably closer to two years (or older).

Yes, since I am the oldest of my generation, I have held ALL OTHERS BENEATH ME except for my infant sis cause I was like 2 1/2.

There is definitely some secret dexterity bonus from holding a baby that I wish I could channel at all times.
