Google because it's sadly just so much better than everything else

I occasionally use Bing for an image search or two because it sometimes hits those random smaller or older sites so you can find an image that was otherwise lost to time, particularly helpful if I need a certain image of a celebrity, or a logo, or whatever, for a Photoshop project.

I've been using Perplexity more when I use Arc since it's the default for ... Arc. I am sure it aggregates off of Google and MS and Yahoo but I'm not 100% sure.

Also Bing for rewards sometimes, have about $110 in Amazon gift cards to redeem currently

I use MS Edge (which I just learned a few seconds ago, also gives rewards for using it),
Opera (which is really just Google, right?), and
DuckDuckGo.

Edge is a browser based on Chromium. It uses Microsoft's Bing search engine and yes Bing gives reward points for usage (and doing daily tasks and stuff).

Opera is another Chromium-bases browser. Though the majority of browsers these days are

No. It uses the same web rendering engine as Chromium but it is not actually Chromium based. The APIs in Microsoft edge are native to Windows.

Opera is an actual chromium based browser at this point.

DuckDuckGo uses OS APIs so whether or not it's using Chromium or Safari web rendering depends on what device you have it installed on.

Oh and its absolutely a monopoly and has been for years (alongside Amazon and Facebook). Im glad courts are finally calling them on it.
Ironically, this decision could make Chromium's dominance that much stronger. Mozilla gets a ton of revenue from Google for making them Firefox's default search engine, so if the ruling holds that could have a substantial effect on their funding. Then again, considering how Mozilla's leadership has pocketed millions of that revenue for themselves, and they're now making questionable moves regarding "privacy respecting" ads, maybe it's for the best they reorganize into a more lean operation or for Firefox to find new stewardship.

Microsoft repeatedly says it's built or based on Chromium on their own site. If they were using anything besides Blink and V8 you know they'd be bragging about it. If that's not proof enough, Edge follows Chromium's version numbering.

An interesting article from Bloomberg after that antitrust win. It's extremely rare for a major US corpo to be found guilty by a US court. It seems the DoJ is getting serious about this.

US Considers a Rare Antitrust Move: Breaking Up Google
*Antitrust enforcers soliciting input from outside companies
*Judge ruled Alphabet unit monopolized online search, ads

A bid to break up Alphabet Inc.s Google is one of the options being considered by the Justice Department after a landmark court ruling found that the company monopolized the online search market, according to people with knowledge of the deliberations.

The move would be Washingtons first push to dismantle a company for illegal monopolization since unsuccessful efforts to break up Microsoft Corp. two decades ago. Less severe options include forcing Google to share more data with competitors and measures to prevent it from gaining an unfair advantage in AI products, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private conversations.

Just to put this antitrust win in perspective:
The judge's decision was historic, as it was the first time an American company was found guilty by an American court in the past 40 years.

The last time something similar happened was in the early 1980s when AT&T was found to be gaining an illegal advantage over competitors in the fixed telephone business. In 1984, it was ordered to split its services into different companies.

I gotta hand it to Lina Khan. She might have gotten clowned on completely by Microsoft regarding the Activision-Blizzard acquisition, but this win alone honestly makes her quite badass in my opinion since I honestly do not particularly care much for Google lately given their own shady practices.

Yeah she's alright all things considered. FTC actually blocked NVidia from buying ARM in 2022. Yeah that ARM, the one behind ARM microprocessor architecture. Had that deal gone through; NVidia would have gained a massive advantage in mobile SoC market. She's also the one behind that push for easier subs cancellation.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Alphabet/Google will definitely fight the antitrust ruling tooth and nail so we won't see anything yet for a while. But dang, last time it went like this, AT&T got hit right in the solar plexus. It seems Google finally meet its match in court

There's also an ongoing antitrust case against Apple iirc but that takes place in another country (Japan?), not US.
