Overwatch was in the top 10 most played games of 2023 and will probably be again in 2024. It is also near the very top in revenue generated. It was insanely high on the Steam sale charts with the recent release of the lifeguard skins. Game is as popular as ever.

You say that, but in the many years Ive been playing OW, its the least active its ever been. Which doesnt mean either statement is false, thats just a flaw of the freemium business model. Sales dont inherently drive play, and vice versa. So you have people that hop on, spend money because they like something, and maybe play a couple rounds and log off.

Normally I play middle of the night (US), and thats always been my go to time. Anything outside of the basic 4 QP/Competitive modes is basically dead. Even comp on the middle of the night can have 5m+ wait times just on open queue. But stuff like FFA, CTF, or TDM? Youre lucky to get a match at all, might as well turn up the volume and take a nap.

Basically the game is as dead as end of service OW1, but its still kept afloat by a cash shop. Thats a very depressing reality. The removal of end of season competitive point rewards is probably the only thing even keeping comp alive, because people have to play to accumulate weapon colors unlike the old method of doing the bare minimum and accumulating season rewards. Id rather go back to that, but then comp would probably die, sostuck with the grind to get a jade BOB.

OW2 feels like a step down from the first game for some reason. Its kinda meh to me.

Their business model is a clear step down. Also the reliance on a single tank has definitely put more of a burden on anyone picking the role.

Overall though, its the same game, just perhaps too well balanced. To the point of almost feeling like a homogenized version of its former self. People struggle with the concept that hard counters no longer exist, and that playing your best characters usually results in your highest chance of success. Thats a clear departure from OW1, where counter play was absolutely mandatory. Now its only really prevalent at the absolute lowest ELO, where no one has the technical skill to rely on their play, and they need to counter pick for the best chance.

The only time I really feel like, wow, this is a lot better, is after a steamroll game when you look at the scoreboard and see similarities. You compare enemy and ally damage, healing, and mitigation numbers and see theyre all within roughly the same range. The only difference is one team has a lot of eliminations and the other team has a lot of deaths. Matches like those never really happened in OW1, where both sides were roughly equivalent, but only one side was getting the picks. There were usually huge differences that people would point out to orient their anger towards, instead of just accepting the enemy team was a better group.
