I can't really think of many other backdrops that inspire so much dread as that.

Really?
I would say even the Cthulhu Mythos, the version where they are all just actually aliens and not eldrich gods, would be more worrisome.

How is that worrisome? That's kinda what they are. They are only eldritch gods because they are so powerful, contradictory, and unknown.

So everything that happens in the anime takes place in the known world, which is basically a collection of oceans and landmasses the occupy a coin sized space on a map the size of an A3 sheet of paper . The rest of the paper is taken up by a giant lake surrounding the known world, and on the outskirts of that entire map is the dark continent. It's a giant land mass that wraps around everything.

Everyone that goes to the dark continent dies horribly. A very small percentage (like 0.04%) of people managed to just make it to the shoreline and return. These are the most OP characters in the entire series. Like the god-like goku level characters in the plot were so terrified and helpless there that they couldn't venture any further.

Every time humanity has successfully made it to the dark continent (5 times) they had to bring back some calamity as a kind of punishment (collectively called the five threats), each can pretty much wipe out all of humankind or do some other horrible shit.

Author forgot to show not tell a lot during this arc when you've had pages be like 80% text bubbles explaining everything.

Hug while I enjoyed it, it really started dragging here so I was letting it build up for a while. Has anything major happened? Last I saw was Gon and his dad finally talking

Its a shame that Togashi basically ripped it off from Torikos Gourmet World (which was, itself, kinda half ripped from what One Pieces Grand Line was originally supposed to be).

A rip off of Toriko

This, and I'd be shocked if the Dark Continent has anything as truly creepy as Neo.

as someone who read and enjoyed the last 100+ chapters of toriko, no, that stuff did not have the weight and creepiness of the dark continent

it was cool, sure, but mostly gross and dramatic in a bizarre Jojo way. the dark continent is played very straight in a terrifying science mystery horror way - totally different things

neither series invented the concept or idea

Isn't Gon's father basically a low-key God in the HxH universe? Dude helped create a "video game" where all the cards involved in the video game end up being able to be used in the real world... and some of them are literally breaking the laws of reality?

Not really. We don't even really know what his powers are outside of that he knows nen so well that he can roughly copy someone else's technique by watching it, but the HxH rules around nen types still apply to him unless he's a specialist. The video game was a collaboration between him and a bunch of other folks and individual cards breaking reality is pretty standard stuff for nen, especially under heavy restrictions like "this card can only ever be used on this island"

I hope togashi allows others to do works in his universe because the concept and breadth of the dark continent is very interesting and it would be a shame if it is thrown to the wayside.

Though I would find it darkly amusing if they arrive and everything is dead lol.
