Thats the thing. Mid 30s+ typically see verb gaming meaning exactly this right or wrong. Theyre turned off by the word.

Soooo many women have shared their relief with me that by gaming I actually meant I play DKC2 and Shenmue once a week when theyre asleep.
I will play while they are awake and they are doing their thing (reading, watching something, etc.). Well, now with my wife she is a gamer too, but that doesn't matter to the discussion. Just that I AM lucky.

Anyway, it shouldn't have to be as extreme as you are stating. It just think that there has to be balance, and that is true with anything. Gaming shouldn't be treated as different, but we also know that there are guys who only game as a hobby (and maybe some anime or something too), so that is probably why it gets singled out.

Unless you're joking, that's an eye opener. My parents wouldn't even want to touch video games in general.
It's no joke. It did take some work on me and my siblings end, though. Long story short, she discovered how therapeutic it could be in relaxing and venting out frustrations.

Glad your mom found out just how therapeutic video games can be. For me personally, I gave up playing games competitively because it stressed me the fuck out and now just kind of play games casually, unless it's multiplayer like Fortnite and CoD that I can play with friends. Though they do get annoyed when I drop out in a middle of a match, but when you're married with kids you have to do what you got to do, they will always be a first priority over my other hobbies.

I feel like that's less about age and more about the type of hobbies those women are already into. Like when I was on dating apps 2 years ago, the women I was dating were in the 30-43 age range and all of them either played games themselves or weren't bothered by guys that played games.

But I was only matching with women that had nerdy hobbies themselves. So that there was at least some overlap in our interests. It's the non-nerds that look down on the nerdy hobbies
Times been kind for tolerating it and dating apps have helped people find bubbles of those late 30s punk women who worked a semester at GameStop in 2006.

When I was in college, an extremely conventionally attractive woman invited me in after a date and I noticed she was beating FFX and had various retro classics. I was chasing that high for years, thinking Id find another. It was haunting me. Thats what really doesnt exist.

Can I ask why? Is it because you want to game together or do you simply feel she would be more supportive?

Both? We don't even have to like the same games. My girlfriend hates any kind of pvp, I'm a fighting game fan, but we still talk about games, games aspects, design philosophy, etc all the time.

Okay, that's cool. Just asking.

I do think it's okay to have some different hobbies, as long as supportive of each other. But also good to at least have some overlap. The main overlap my wife and I have is traveling, hiking, and stupid sitcoms. She is a gamer too, but other than some talking about it, we don't really engage each other with our gaming.

It doesnt have to be this extreme, just what comes natural to me and other women have appreciated that.

Maybe Im actually not much a gamer but the strong relationship I have with classic games and this place makes me still identify as one.

The wife will show a passing interest in whatever Im playing if its during the day in downtime. We overlap on other things as you say so its all good.

But Id be lying if I wasnt a little salty about not having the zoomer privilege of basic gaming conversations being commonplace.

Apparently google thinks the difference is birders are competitive and are obssesed with their score whereas birdwatchers are in it for the birds.

Google seems a lot more opinionated than I remember.

I mean both are in it for the birds but I guess birding is more about building lists. But it's not always competitive at all. If you have to separate the two birding would be like going to local patches or even doing lots of travelling and trying to see as many birds as you can there either in one day or over a period of time while birdwatching is more like watching the feeders in your backyard.

But the thing is there's enough overlap that it's all the same thing. People have backyard lists too and also plenty of good rarities are found right in peoples yards. So it's no big deal to use one or the other in any instance. Both are fine.

This.

My ex-wife once posed the hypothetical "what if I made you choose between games or me?"

My response?

"I'd choose the games, because the person I want to spend the rest of my life with wouldn't make me choose."

She was floored.

I never understood why women even give men ultimatums. It's toxic, and more often than not, they'll choose the person who didn't give them an ultimatum.

I mean it makes sense. A lot of guys ignore their girlfriends and housework to play games. A guy calling himself a gamer is common and understandably leads to caution.

It's not a hard hobby to look past though. Just the most likely to cause alarm.
