Since BG3 won my poll and I'm done with Fates, what class/race combo should I play? I kinda wanna use Karlach and would probably keep her barbarian so barb is probably out. Also no druids since the game is lousy with them anyway.

You don't get a Halfling or Bard squaddie, so that.

I've been told Bard is the best class for a first playthrough because of how versatile they are.

Any charisma focused class as a first playthrough is solid as it helps you with the dialogue choices with the others being Paladin, Sorcerer, Warlock are other charisma classes.

That said, I would avoid stating "x is the best class for first playthrough", because some people might not enjoy playing bard very much.

in the sense that your main character is often the one doing social checks, so it's good to have high Charisma, sure

This was a large part of why Bard was suggested to me by others, but it was also because they get early access to Speak With Animals, extra Short Rests via Song of Rest, they can give Bardic Inspiration to their allies for their own checks/combat rolls, and they add half their bonus to non-proficient skills so they're better at playing the "main character" and you don't get screwed as badly in unexpected checks where you're not controlling the character who would be best suited for it.

I didn't say definitively that Bard is the best for a first playthrough, just what others had suggested to me. Also it's the first option on the poll and the options don't seem to be listed in any kind of discernible order, so it's fair to assume that it's the leading option in TC's mind anyway.

By the time that speak with animals is needed, you'll have access to shops to buy the potion. So I wouldn't say it's a huge plus to have speak with animals via class.

Bard is apparently a really fun class and Monk can be OP if built right so either of those.

As for race, if you're gonna romance Karlach, be a Halfling or Dwarf for the mountain climbing

Seriously? I have no idea but am just surprised.

Bards have quite a few things going for them that make them a great pick for a 1st run.

1st, theyre a Charisma based class, so youll naturally make for a good party face.

2nd, they get access to like every skill along with being one of the only 2 classes that get access to expertise (which basically doubles the skill proficiency of whatever you put them towards. Only other class that gets it is Rogue). Which in turn makes them the best party face since theyll have the best chances at passing dialogue checks.

3rd, theyre just very versatile. You can play them as a caster (using the Lore Bard subclass), a melee/ranged weapon fighter (using either Valour or Swords Bard), or even as a hybrid. They also tend to multiclass well with other classes, especially the other Charisma based classes.

Also as a nice little bonus feature they also get something called Song of Rest that gives you a 3rd short rest to use each day.

Edit: Also worth mentioning, they get a class feature called Magical Secrets at level 6 (Lore Bard only) and level 10 (every subclass). Normally the Bard spell list is primarily support/control spells, but Magical Secrets lets you pick 2 spells out of every other classes spell list (there are a few they dont get and it caps out at level 5 spells with the level 10 version, but nearly every spell is there).

Interesting and thank you for explaining. BG3 looks amazing imo, I really want to play it one day if I can.
