See, my beef with this line of thinking is while yes, some fans act entitled (the loudest of them), there are plenty of us that just want him to stop saying he's writing it and tease us with something that's never gonna happen.

Like, he needs to just shut the fuck up and say it's never gonna happen. I can live with that. Constantly saying he's working on it is what pisses me off.

lmao i dont think its entitled for fans to want an author to finish the book he claims hes still writing. He does stuff like this instead of just getting this book done.

If he just straight up said hes not interested in actually finishing the book itd be much different

Yeah saying hes writing them to string people along and gain interest in whatever project hes actually doing is kind of shady. Id totally respect if he just said he just cant finish it.

The relationship between author and reader is simple: authors choose what to write and readers choose whether to buy it.

No one 'owes' anyone anything. The moment you start thinking that, you are stifling creative freedom. (Which includes the freedom to do nothing).

The way I understand it (as someone who's seen both shows and read ASoIaF but not Fire and Blood), they're doing something similar to GoT in that they're largely sanitizing the main characters to make them more relatable, when they're far more self-serving and reprehensible in the books. I don't think it's causing any plot issues yet, but like GoT it's probably one of those situations where you can't always chart a different path and expect to arrive at the same destination; i.e. viewers being shocked (and not in a good way) when [GoT Spoilers] Dany went all looney in the spur of the moment and nuked King's Landing.

It gets a bit more complicated when we talk "respected opinion" and "legacy" though. Like... should he be invited to judge competitions or speak on writing as someone who won't finish his own series? After he dies, does he get the Robert Jordan treatment where we treat his series as a respected work of fiction cut off early by the death of the author? Or do we acknowledge that he could have finished and decided not to, meaning his series isn't some tragic unfinished work, but a half-assed story without a conclusion? Does he get to be up there with Tolkien? Or as a lazy hack who stopped trying when the big checks started rolling in?

Buddy, at this point I am more than content to put both both ASoIaF and GoT in my rear view forever. For the most part, the only time I ever spare a thought over either is when GRRM can't keep his piehole shut and is once again stringing along his fanbase for attention / personal gain.

Did he make any blog posts about the second half of the main show, or even just Season 8? HotD has it's share of character assassination but it's nowhere near what they did to the characters towards the end of the main show.

That's purely a decision for the organisers. I expect they would want him there as he brings a certain celebrity. He's also qualified to speak on writing as he is a published author.

You're letting your opinion of Martin's character cloud your judgement of his work. Does the fiction he has written deserve respect? Do you think the books have merit? Do they need a satisfying conclusion to rescue them from being awful?

If the books are 'half-assed', they'll still be half-assed with a ending. If Martin is a hack, he'll still be a hack, no matter how many more books he writes.

As for 'lazy', hasn't the guy written 50 books? He's old. Sometimes you just don't have it in you any more.

Even the beer and pizza invite analogy carries the implication of friendship, or a personal relationship of some kind.

Which doesn't exist between author and reader.

You're right, but only in the sense that a complicated analogy isn't necessary to comprehend why GRRM is deserving of the criticism he gets. All you need for that are some basic observation skills and common sense.

It's pretty obvious there are issues going on here with him finishing the book, unless he just doesn't make it a priority.

It has been 13 years since his last book in the series, the longest wait before that in installments was 6 years. So yeah I would say he either is not working on it like he did in the past, or there are things that he won't talk about that are making it harder to write it.

This is also one of the latest updates we have heard from GRRM about the book.

In November 2023, Martin indicated that the number of pages written was the same as the year before, stating that he was "struggling with it" and doesn't know when it will be finished

No joke, I felt so guilty over missing the bulk of his original Late Night run that when he got the Tonight Show gig I swore I'd watch every episode, five nights a week. Obviously that, uh, turned out to be a very short-term commitment (but to my credit I did watch every episode of Conan's Tonight Show, maybe missing a couple at most).
