Startropics too low, that game rules.

Startropics should be better than it is! that four way movement drives me crazy.

I wonder where SMB would be if I made a list like this

53 seems "low" but I could easily see it in the 30s for me just randomly listing games in my head that I prefer so I dunno maybe that's fine.

I'm not a big 2d Mario guy - fine games, not that exciting. that probably won't be the last one that makes people react.

I think the high stuff can be better than Mario. Not sure where I'd put SMB3 myself. Def not top 5. Top 10 yeah I think so but not 100%.

Only one Famicom-only game on here so far, and one that I would probably avoid the Famicom version of to boot!

yeah if this were the wonderswan version of FF2 I would have it a lot higher

Lost levels > SMB1 now that is wackier than SMB1 at 53 imo.

For some reason I didn't even know Lemmings had an NES game.

it's not that wacky - I love kaizo type games and Mario 1 is a lot of run and hold right. part of lost levels's appeal is that it's a mario game that just hates you in every way.

I mean this figuratively rather than literally, but StarTropics 2 is the game most people are thinking of when they try to remember StarTropics 1

I would also rank Super Mario Bros. 2 above 1, its a fundamentally funny game. The level where they made it very easy to jump over the flagpole, something people spread urban legends about in the first game, only for it to lead to a backwards warp zone with a hole to kill yourself is funnier than any stand-up comedian set in the past 20 years

as a mario game, yeah. those games are kind of vanilla so to see a game subvert the formula so aggressively is a little wild.

...it's not a big gap between the two.

I like me difficult games

Lost Levels is just kinda dumb about it for me. It's got the Battletoads problem of a lot of dumb memorization traps working against you. I'd rather hold right! Or in other words...

y'know, I own Startropics 2 but I don't think I ever played it enough to come to a conclusion on it. is it really that much better? I never hear people talk about it

the movement isnt locked so tightly to a grid, and you have diagonals. Theres still a -slight- grid, but it feels a lot better

I don't think I could put Dragon Warrior II that high on any kind of list

the endgame is simply unforgivable

I actually beat DQ2 last week. the endgame is brutal for sure. I just love dragon quest.

48 - no.
47 - Metroid made no sense to me as a kid. I should probably revisit it, but I struggle to even convince myself to play SM, despite playing a couple dozen metroidvanias in the last few years.
45 - another game I prefered to simply watch someone else play.
44 - actually good
43 - I always thought this was kinda overrated
36 - This was another one of those "everyone in 1987 has played it" games that everyone had basically forgotten about by 1988.

I cannot imagine playing Lemmings without a mouse.

I actually put Lemmings NES in front of my 11 year old a few weeks ago and he had a good time with it. a mouse is ideal obviously but it works. it might not if you get into the really high levels.

lost levels is good

Without the endgame I think DQ2 would be far more forgettable. The big section before the end is the deepest into "where the fuck do I go" territory that a DQ game has ever been. (Maybe PS1 DQ7 beats it but I've only played the remake.) Only thing I can remember from that part is Dragonlord's Grandson

I feel like Life Force fell a bit from where you would've put it in the past!

It holds up extremely well compared to the average NES game imo. Personal preference is of course another thing. Though let's not act like rating the 2D Marios high on NES is something unique to this site lol.

I actually dont subscribe to this. the momentum of the jumping in Mario 1/Lost Levels is something I find a little maddening. its functional but not fun. Mario 3 completely fixes this and Mario 1 is still better than a lot of nes games, but its not the gold standard for me.

We'll have to agree to disagree about it being the gold standard for the time, but I do agree Mario 3 is an improvement

48 - good but not a fan of the levels where you have to guess the correct path to not loop of which there are too many

nice kung fu ranking, bit of an underrated game. I think I like it more than the typical beat em up myself

Are there really 20 NES games better than Kid Icarus? Hmm, questionable...!

I really like SMB2. Speeding through certain levels as Toad is the most fun experience of the NES games. SMB2 vs SMB3 is a tough one for me. I give SMB3 a slight nod overall because there are more good levels but I respect that take.

Also hell yeah Zelda 2 love

Kid Icarus was one of my favorite games to play as as a kid, even though I could never beat 1-1

I really like Kid Icarus but man that game can be punishing. you can play 5 minutes, miss one jump and have to do it all over again, and then repeat and it's a different thing that gets you. I got stuck on 1-2 a couple weeks ago and just couldn't seem to get through. it gets a lot easier after the first couple levels cause at least you have health to work with.

The labyrinth levels of Kid Icarus are pretty fun. I kinda don't like the non labyrinth levels as a whole though. That's probably about 20 spots too high for me

I play Kid Icarus and I get why the game didn't start a franchise.

I'm looking through the games on here already listed and I think most of the games I'd personally put above SMB3 are in the top 20 so that's good!

I actually would probably put Super C and Mega Man 5 over it too. Though you've no doubt got Contra in top 20 so that basically counts. I always preferred Super C for some reason.
